ANC WOMEN’S LEAGUE (ANCWL) CONDEMNS THE OFFENSIVE GLENLIVET INSTAGRAM AD DISTORTING 1956 WOMEN’S MARCH

The ANC Women's League is appalled by the demeaning advertisement featuring media personality who parades with alcoholic beverages using different faces of iconic women who are the epitome of our revolutionary passage.

The so-called artistic creative work is not only a disgrace to the contribution made by these giants of our struggle for national liberation, but to deduce what they stood for, into a bottle of Whiskey, is indeed an attack on the dignity of our struggle stalwarts and the political journey these women of our country travelled.

Our nation is deluged with unprecedented levels of Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and disproportionate margins of alcohol abuse, yet the creative agency for the distillery chose this creative concept which the ANCWL finds not only undermining the struggle of women, but trivialises the legacy of our beautiful nation. Mama Lilian Ngoyi, Rahima Moosa, Helen Joseph, Sophie De Bruyn, and Winnie Madikizela Mandela remain distinguished matriarchs whose immense contribution to the freedom we enjoy today, is unmatched.

The ANC Women's League rebukes this odious creative work that infringes on the very human rights these courageous women were prepared to lay down their lives for.

We therefore demand the immediate withdrawal of this advertisement, as it is an affront to the legacy of the 1956 contingent of gallant women, and the creative agency and their distillery client should apologise for bastardizing our heritage of the women’s march - moreover, in a year where we celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of the historic march.
