Joburg’s Rea Vaya buses ready to support Soweto Derby

The City of Joburg’s Rea Vaya BRT buses will operate a special service on Sunday 26 April 2026 for the Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates FC and Kaizer Chiefs FC at the FNB Stadium. 

Soccer fans will be transported conveniently from Sandton, Alexandra (T4 buses), Cresta (C4 buses), Yeoville, Parktown (F11 & F12 buses), Florida North (C5 buses), Joburg CBD and some major parts in Soweto (T1, T3 & C1 buses) to the FNB Stadium. From Sandton and Alexandra use T4 buses to Library Gardens Westbound to connect T1 & C1 to the FNB stadium. 

The frequency of T4 services will be stepped up from the normal service to 5 minutes from 11h00 for soccer fans travelling from Sandton and Alexandra to the Joburg CBD. Rea Vaya Soccer City (FNB Stadium) station will open from 10:00 on Sunday, 26 April 2026. Fans using the T3 buses from the Joburg CBD and Braamfontein will connect T1 & C1 at the Rea Vaya Orlando Stadium Station to FNB stadium without paying extra cost for the trip. 

As part of safety and security precautions, the city advises soccer fans to access Rea Vaya buses and get to the FNB Stadium early before kick-off at 15h00. No alcohol beverages will be allowed in the Rea Vaya buses and stations.

 After the match, all Rea Vaya buses leaving FNB Stadium will operate at 5 minutes frequency to transport soccer fans to their destination points. Rea Vaya services from FNB Stadium will end at 19:00. 

The last T4 bus from Joburg CBD to Alexandra and Sandton will leave Library Gardens Eastbound at 20h00. Soccer fans can use account-based ticketing cards available at all Rea Vaya stations for R40.00 to travel to the soccer match. 

Fans are encouraged to load travel cards with funds for a return trip. These can also be used for future travel to events. Soccer fans from Thokoza Park in Soweto and Park Station to the FNB Stadium will pay only R14.00, Sandton (Atholl) and Alexandra to FNB travel cost is R19,00. NSFAS Welcomes Arrests in Lephalale Fraud and Theft Case

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) welcomes the decisive action taken by the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Limpopo, which has resulted in the arrest of eleven individuals and four companies on charges of alleged fraud and theft involving NSFAS funds. 

The accused appeared before the Lephalale Magistrate Court on Tuesday and are scheduled to appear before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday, 7 May 2026.

NSFAS is deeply concerned by the reported allegations that, during 2017, funds intended to support deserving students were diverted for personal gain through fraudulent activities involving senior staff and clerks at Lephalale TVET College. Such actions not only compromise the integrity of the Scheme but also deny deserving students access to educational opportunities.

NSFAS commends the Hawks, under the leadership of Major General Gopez Govender, for their unwavering commitment to uncovering and addressing corruption. The Scheme remains steadfast in its resolve to cooperate fully with all law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice prevails and that public funds are protected.

Our mission remains to provide financial support to students in need, and we reaffirm our commitment to upholding the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and good governance. NSFAS takes any breach of trust extremely seriously and will pursue all available measures to safeguard the Scheme and its beneficiaries.

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (“MK Party”)’s Parliamentary Caucus, led by Party Leader Dr. Mandlakayise John Hlophe and Chief Whip in the National Assembly Hon. Mmabatho MokoenaZondi, met with a delegation representing His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. 

The delegation raised serious concerns regarding the Ingonyama Trust Act of 1994, which currently vests decision-making authority over 2.8 million hectares of land belonging to the Zulu Kingdom in the Ingonyama Trust Board, while limiting the King’s authority. 

The Act also grants oversight powers to the Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, effectively placing control of royal land in the hands of politicians, rather than the rightful owners of the land, AmaKhosi. Of particular concern to the MK Party is that the Act currently vests unilateral decision-making authority to the Board without consultation with His Majesty, thereby undermining the authority of the Zulu Monarch and the institution of Royal leadership. In accordance with our policy position, the MK Party affirms that land belonging to the kings and queens should be governed by the kings and queens who bear the responsibility of leading their communities. 

Political interference in such matters is both inappropriate and inconsistent with the principles of customary governance. Interestingly, the MK Party notes the contradiction in the IFP’s continued refusal to cooperate with the MK Party in governing the province of KwaZulu-Natal, despite clear evidence from yesterday’s engagement that collaboration is both possible and effective when it serves the interests of our people and ensuring that their land is in their hands. 

The delegation included the IFP’s MEC for COGTA and Traditional Prime Minister (uNdunankulu) to His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, Hon. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, and Inkosi Chiliza, an MK Party Leader in the KwaZulu Natal Legislature and Deputy Prime Minister to His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. Delegates, including leaders of the MK Party and IFP, were able to engage constructively on the critical issue of restoring land to its rightful custodians. It is therefore difficult for us to understand why the IFP chooses to work with the DA in KwaZulu Natal, and resists partnering with the MK Party on matters that directly benefit the people of KwaZulu Natal. If both parties can find common ground in addressing injustices embedded in Roman Dutch Law legislation affecting land, the same spirit of cooperation should extend to governance in the province and nationally. 

The MK Party calls on the IFP to reflect on this inconsistency and to prioritise the will and interests of the people of KwaZulu Natal and the nation, who seek unified leadership committed to returning power and land to its rightful owners. 

The MK Party will give due consideration to the concerns raised and engage the necessary stakeholders on changes to the Roman Dutch Law Act to ensure that authority over royal land is restored to its rightful custodians, AmaKhosi. 

The MK Party remains committed to advancing policies and laws that respect and strengthen the role of Royal leadership in South Africa.

Minister Dean Macpherson welcomes issuing of Sarah Baartman Centre Tender

The Minister of Public Works & Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, has welcomed the issuing of Letters of Award by the Independent Development Trust (IDT) to the successful bidder for the completion of the Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance in Hankey, Eastern Cape, adding that it marks a significant step forward in bringing closure to a project that has, for more than 10 years, stood as a symbol of delays, contractor failures, and missed opportunities to honour the legacy of Sarah Baartman with the dignity she deserves.

The issuing of Letters of Award follows the identification of the project as one of the priority projects to be accelerated under focused departmental oversight, after years of stagnation and mismanagement. The project will now proceed through final contractual and compliance processes before site handover, including contract signing, approval of health and safety requirements, and the securing of necessary work permits.

The Minister said the progress being achieved at the Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance forms part of the Department’s broader effort to restore discipline and execution across public infrastructure delivery, including through targeted interventions to unblock stalled projects.

“The issuing of Letters of Award is an important milestone in turning around one of the most delayed and neglected projects in the Department’s portfolio. For too long, the Sarah Baartman Centre stood unfinished, despite millions of rands having already been spent. Today, we are firmly positioning the project to move from delay to delivery, ensuring that we turn around a project which was a blight on the Department for too long,” Minister Macpherson said.

“The life of Sarah Baartman remains an important reminder of our painful past, and it is therefore imperative that we give her the respect and dignity she deserves. The progress we are now seeing reflects the decisive action taken to restore governance, fix procurement failures, and ensure that capable contractors are appointed to deliver quality infrastructure on time.”

Once completed, the Centre will serve as a cultural, educational and tourism landmark, contributing to economic activity in the Sarah Baartman District while preserving an important part of South Africa’s history.

The Minister added that this development signals a broader shift within the Department towards implementation and results.

“As the Department of Public Works & Infrastructure, our focus is clear: to ensure that public infrastructure projects are completed on time, within budget, and transparently, in a manner that delivers real value to communities. Through the reforms underway in our Department, we are building a firm foundation to deliver for all South Africans and build a better country.”
