The City’s Social Development Department turns Women’s Empowerment into Action

The City of Johannesburg’s Social Development Department brought together women from the Ennerdale community for an empowering engagement focused on celebrating women and equipping them with practical support, and opportunities available through the City, and its stakeholder partners.

The event, which took place at the Winnie Mabaso Foundation Centre, created an engaging environment for women to take advantage of the services and programmes available to improve their livelihoods.

Proceedings began with a church song and prayer led by Pastor Molefe, setting the tone for a programme centred on resilience and collective empowerment. Attendees actively participated in the session, demonstrating the strong sense of community that characterised the gathering.

The event recognised the significant roles women play within families and communities.

Mr Nare Kubyane, the sub-unit head, acknowledged the participation of stakeholders and senior citizens, noting that the programme was centred on the theme of “empowered women, empower the City.”

Mr Kubyane also highlighted the range of services provided by the City and its partnering stakeholders at no cost to residents, including training and development opportunities designed to equip individuals with practical skills.

A key focus of the engagement was the impact of substance abuse and gender-based violence (GBV) on women, families and communities. Residents were encouraged not to suffer in silence, but to seek assistance and intervention when they or their loved ones are affected.

The City has made support for substance-abuse challenges and GBV available through its services, including a crisis line for each region that is aimed at assisting residents in need of intervention and support.

Women were encouraged to approach City and social workers based at clinics for appropriate services.

The message was clear: women deserve support, dignity and the opportunity to live healthier and more fulfilling lives.

The programme also placed a strong emphasis on economic empowerment and skills development. Lebojoy Foundation, an NPO supporting youth development, showcased opportunities for community members to acquire practical skills, including soap making, candle making, nail services and baking.

The training is offered free of charge over a three-month period, with sessions taking place once a week at community centres. The initiative seeks to equip participants with skills that can be used to establish small businesses and create sustainable sources of income.

The City’s Food Resilience Unit (FRU) further demonstrated how residents and emerging entrepreneurs can receive assistance in taking locally produced goods from an idea to the marketplace.

The unit assists entrepreneurs with critical aspects of product development and market readiness, including barcoding, labelling, compliance with rules and regulations, product testing and storage requirements. This support is aimed at helping small businesses strengthen their products and ultimately get them onto retail shelves.

Entrepreneurs requiring support from the FRU can contact MarilynM@joburg.org.za.

Deputy Director: Skills, Mr Solani Rikhotso, emphasised the leadership role women continue to play in society.

“Women are natural leaders and the cries of women are the cries of the nation,” said Rikhotso.

Through the Social Development Department and its stakeholder partnerships, the City continues to bring services and opportunities closer to communities, ensuring that residents are not only informed about available support but are connected directly to programmes that can make a meaningful difference in their lives.

The City’s commitment is to build communities where residents are supported to overcome social challenges, develop their potential and participate meaningfully in the local economy.

The gathering concluded on a spirit of appreciation and togetherness, with the Social Development Department providing lunch to the attendees as well as handing out of food parcels to targeted beneficiaries.

Latest Crime Stats expose Lesufi's failure to curb serious violent Crimes

Gauteng residents continue to live in fear as the South African Police Service (SAPS) First Quarterly Crime Stats of 2026-2027 (April 2026 to June 2026) reveal that the province is the country’s biggest contributor to kidnapping and several serious crimes. These statistics are a serious indictment of Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s crime-fighting strategies that continue to fall short of making Gauteng safer for all its residents.

It is high time Premier Lesufi pays attention to the Democratic Alliance's (DA) call for action on the critical issues facing policing. This includes ensuring that police stations are well-resourced, adequately equipped, and sufficiently staffed. Such improvements will enable officers to investigate cases, apprehend criminals, and achieve successful convictions.

While some crime categories recorded year-on-year declines, Gauteng remains the country’s highest contributor to kidnapping, accounting for a staggering 51% of all reported kidnapping cases nationally.

The province also recorded the highest national contribution to attempted murder at 25.5% and Assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) at 20.4%. In the first quarter of the 2026-2027 financial year, Gauteng reported 1,772 attempted murders, marking an increase from the 1,720 cases recorded in the same period of the previous financial year, 2025-2026. This indicates an increase of 3.0% (+52 cases).

These figures further expose the ongoing threat facing residents in their communities.

The situation at educational institutions is also concerning. While Gauteng has seen an 8% decrease in rape cases overall compared to the previous year, incidents within academic settings have surged dramatically, rising by 61.5% from one quarter to the next. This jump brought the number of reported cases from 13 to 21. These included cases at special needs schools, tertiary institutions, and early childhood facilities.

This increase cannot be dismissed as just another statistic. Every case represents a victim whose safety was compromised in a place where they should be protected.

Gauteng’s murder rate also remains deeply concerning despite a 10.7% year-on-year decline. The province recorded 1 276 murders, the highest provincial contribution nationally at 23.5%. More than half of these murders, or 652, were committed using firearms, highlighting the urgent need to address the proliferation of illegal firearms.

The statistics further show that Gauteng accounted for 26.1% of all contact crimes nationally, the highest contribution in the country, with 11 of the 30 police stations recording the highest levels of contact crime located in the province.

Adding to these concerns, drug-related crime increased by 8.7% year-on-year, from 10 687 to 11 619 cases, an increase of 932 cases. The continued rise in drug-related crime points to a broader failure to disrupt the criminal networks and conditions fuelling crime across Gauteng communities.

These figures demonstrate that Gauteng residents cannot afford complacency or continue relying on the same crime-fighting strategies while expecting different results.

Residents of Gauteng deserve to live, work, study, and raise their families without fear. The latest crime statistics demonstrate that this is currently not the case.

The DA is the only party committed to restoring the rule of law in Gauteng communities. Through our CCC approach - Catch, Convict and Clean - we will catch criminal, convict them, and clean our communities.

THE USE OF THE LEGACY OF THE 1956 WOMEN’S MARCH IN ALCOHOL ADVERTISING

THE USE OF THE LEGACY OF THE 1956 WOMEN’S MARCH IN ALCOHOL ADVERTISING

KASiBCAFRiCA©®™

THE USE OF THE LEGACY OF THE 1956 WOMEN’S MARCH IN ALCOHOL ADVERTISING

The African National Congress (ANC) has noted with deep concern the Glenlivet advertisement that uses the images and legacy of some of South Africa’s most revered struggle icons, including Mama Winnie MadikizelaMandela, Mama Lilian Ngoyi and Mama Sophie Williams-De Bruyn, alongside the historic 1956 Women’s March, to promote an alcoholic product. While we recognise the importance of preserving and celebrating the contributions of our liberation stalwarts, we strongly object to the manner in which this sacred chapter of our history has been appropriated for commercial purposes.

The women of 1956 were not cultural props or marketing symbols; they were fearless leaders whose sacrifices and struggles helped secure the freedom and democracy that South Africans enjoy today.

The 1956 Women’s March remains one of the most defining acts of resistance against apartheid oppression. More than 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings to confront the apartheid government’s unjust pass laws and to assert the dignity, rights and humanity of Black South Africans. Led by courageous women such as Mama Lilian Ngoyi, Mama Rahima Moosa, Mama Sophie Williams-De Bruyn and others, the march demonstrated the central role of women in shaping the liberation struggle.

Their contribution cannot be reduced to a visual association or branding opportunity; it represents a profound national legacy built on courage, sacrifice and resistance. The use of this history to sell alcohol is particularly insensitive because it disconnects the legacy of these women from the lived experiences of communities that suffered under systems where alcohol was deliberately used as an instrument of exploitation and control. Under colonialism and apartheid, practices such as the dop system saw farm and other workers partly compensated with alcohol instead of receiving fair remuneration.

This entrenched dependency, undermined human dignity and contributed to long-term social harm, particularly among Black and working-class communities. It is therefore deeply troubling that a history of resistance against oppression is being associated with the promotion of alcohol without proper consideration of this painful context.

The ANC believes that South Africa’s liberation heritage must be approached with the highest level of responsibility, respect and sensitivity.

The Women’s March was not a marketing spectacle; it was a defining moment in the struggle for freedom and equality. The women who marched in 1956 represented millions of South Africans who endured oppression and fought for a better future. Their legacy belongs to the people and must be protected from commercial exploitation that diminishes the significance of their contribution.

We therefore call on Glenlivet to immediately withdraw the advertisement, issue an unequivocal public apology and provide a transparent explanation of how this campaign was conceptualised, developed and approved. Brands that engage with South Africa’s liberation history must do so in a manner that honours its meaning and contributes positively to society.

The memory of the women of 1956 must remain a symbol of courage, dignity and resistance; never a tool for commercial gain.

ANC WOMEN’S LEAGUE (ANCWL) CONDEMNS THE OFFENSIVE GLENLIVET INSTAGRAM AD DISTORTING 1956 WOMEN’S MARCH

The ANC Women's League is appalled by the demeaning advertisement featuring media personality who parades with alcoholic beverages using different faces of iconic women who are the epitome of our revolutionary passage.

The so-called artistic creative work is not only a disgrace to the contribution made by these giants of our struggle for national liberation, but to deduce what they stood for, into a bottle of Whiskey, is indeed an attack on the dignity of our struggle stalwarts and the political journey these women of our country travelled.

Our nation is deluged with unprecedented levels of Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and disproportionate margins of alcohol abuse, yet the creative agency for the distillery chose this creative concept which the ANCWL finds not only undermining the struggle of women, but trivialises the legacy of our beautiful nation. Mama Lilian Ngoyi, Rahima Moosa, Helen Joseph, Sophie De Bruyn, and Winnie Madikizela Mandela remain distinguished matriarchs whose immense contribution to the freedom we enjoy today, is unmatched.

The ANC Women's League rebukes this odious creative work that infringes on the very human rights these courageous women were prepared to lay down their lives for.

We therefore demand the immediate withdrawal of this advertisement, as it is an affront to the legacy of the 1956 contingent of gallant women, and the creative agency and their distillery client should apologise for bastardizing our heritage of the women’s march - moreover, in a year where we celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of the historic march.

ASSAULT ON IFP VOLUNTEERS IN IZINGOLWENI

ASSAULT ON IFP VOLUNTEERS IN IZINGOLWENI

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in KwaZulu-Natal strongly condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the violent assault of three IFP comrades who were attacked while carrying out legitimate election campaign activities in the Izingolweni, KwaNyuswa area, Ward 34, on Sunday.

The incident occurred when IFP volunteers, accompanied by the IFP Ward Candidate, were putting up party posters in the area. They were confronted by individuals who allegedly told them that they did not want the IFP campaigning in their area.

The individuals proceeded to insult and attack the IFP volunteers. Our comrades attempted to avoid confrontation and escape from the scene by running away. Tragically, three of our comrades were severely assaulted and beaten with a hammer.

An assault case, including allegations of grievous bodily harm, has since been opened with the South African Police Service in the area. We welcome the opening of the case and urge the law enforcement authorities to act swiftly to identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible.

The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal condemns this incident as a serious attack not only on our members, but also on the democratic principles that underpin our constitutional order. Political parties and individual candidates have a democratic right to campaign peacefully, engage with communities and seek the support of voters.

As we approach the Local Government Elections on 4 November 2026, there can be absolutely no justification for any group or individual to declare an area a so-called “no-go area” for a particular political party.

It is deeply concerning that, 32 years after South Africa attained freedom and democracy, there are still people who believe they can dictate which political parties may campaign in particular communities. No individual, group or political formation has the right to deprive voters of the opportunity to hear from different political parties and make their own informed choices at the ballot box.

The IFP believes firmly in political tolerance, freedom of association, freedom of expression and the right of every eligible voter to participate freely in democratic processes without intimidation or fear.

URGENT CALL FOR SOCIAL COHESION INTERVENTION

In light of this incident and the apparent level of political intolerance in the area, the IFP in KwaZulu-Natal, through its Provincial Chairperson, Hon Thamsanqa Ntuli, is calling for the urgent convening of a social cohesion public gathering in the Izingolweni, KwaNyuswa area.

This gathering should bring together all relevant community and public stakeholders, including traditional leaders, political party leaders, religious leaders, law enforcement leadership, representatives of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), and relevant government structures, as well as community representatives.

The purpose of such a gathering must be to openly confront the issue of political intolerance, promote dialogue and peaceful coexistence, and reaffirm the democratic right of all political parties to campaign freely and peacefully in the area.

We believe that lt is better to act early than to act late. We cannot wait for a situation of political intolerance to deteriorate further or for another, potentially more serious, incident to occur before stakeholders intervene.

The events of Sunday should serve as a warning to all of us that urgent preventative action is required. Political violence and intolerance must be confronted before they become entrenched in communities.

The IFP therefore appeals to all stakeholders to respond positively to this call and work together to ensure that Izingolweni and surrounding communities remain peaceful and that all political parties are able to conduct their campaigns without intimidation, threats or violence.

We further call on the law enforcement agencies to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and to ensure that those responsible are speedily brought to book. There must be no impunity for political violence, intimidation or attacks on campaigners.

We also call on the IEC to strengthen its civic and voter education campaigns ahead of the elections. Communities must be reminded that South Africa's democracy belongs to all of us, and that every registered political party and every eligible voter has the right to participate in the electoral process peacefully and freely.

Political competition must take place through ideas, policies and the ballot box, not through threats, intimidation and violence.

The IFP particularly appreciates the restraint demonstrated by our comrades during this incident. Despite being attacked, they did not return fire with fire or seek revenge. Instead, they chose to report the matter to the police and allow the law to take its course.

We urge all IFP members, supporters and volunteers across KwaZulu-Natal to continue exercising the same restraint. We must never respond to violence with violence. Our campaign must remain peaceful, disciplined and focused on presenting our vision for better and accountable local government.

At the same time, we call on all political parties contesting the upcoming elections to commit themselves to peaceful campaigning and to respect the democratic rights of their political opponents. There must be zero tolerance for political intimidation, threats, attacks and the creation of political “no-go areas”.

The people of KwaZulu-Natal deserve an election campaign in which political parties can freely reach communities, voters can hear competing political messages, and citizens can cast their votes without fear or intimidation.

The IFP will not be deterred by acts of violence and intimidation. We will continue to campaign peacefully, democratically and lawfully across KwaZulu-Natal.

LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR BLOEMFONTEIN MAN CONVICTED OF BRUTAL MURDER

Bloemfontein, Free State – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has successfully secured a sentence of life imprisonment against Nkululeko Magwa (20), who was convicted of the murder of 24-year-old Thabo Buti in Kagisanong, near Bloemfontein.

The Bloemfontein Regional Court convicted Magwa based on common purpose, rejecting his defence that he had been asleep at home when the murder was committed. The trial commenced on 24 August 2026, and the conviction was handed down on 27 August 2026.

The court heard that during the early hours of 11 October 2025, Buti and a female companion were walking to catch a taxi when they were confronted by three men. Buti attempted to flee but was chased and apprehended by the group at a nearby street corner. When the assailants returned with him to where the female witness was standing, he had already sustained stab wounds.

The attackers then forced both victims to kneel. In a chilling sequence of events, they ordered Buti to remove his shoes and pray. Before he could complete his prayer, Magwa stabbed him. Buti succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The State also led evidence from a male witness who had been jogging in the area when he witnessed the attack. Attempting to intervene, he confronted the assailants and pushed them away from Buti. During the ensuing altercation, Magwa attempted to stab him. Although the witness managed to seize the knife, he sustained a cut to his hand. The attackers subsequently fled the scene.

A significant challenge facing the prosecution was the identification of Magwa by the female eyewitness, who had consumed alcohol earlier that morning. Despite this, the State successfully proved its case through the totality of the evidence presented, including the corroborating testimony of the male witness, who personally knew Magwa and positively identified him as one of the perpetrators.

During sentencing proceedings, State Prosecutor Amorè Coetzee presented evidence in aggravation of sentence, highlighting the devastating and far-reaching impact of the murder on Buti's family.

The court heard that Buti was the only child of his mother and stepfather, both of whom were reportedly in poor health. Following their son's murder, they struggled to cope with the trauma and emotional devastation. Their health deteriorated significantly, and both passed away earlier this year.

Family members further told the court that they remain deeply traumatised by Buti's murder and the subsequent loss of both parents. They described a family still grappling with profound grief and the enduring consequences of the tragedy.

In imposing a sentence of life imprisonment, the court found that Magwa had shown no remorse for his actions and that no substantial and compelling circumstances existed to justify a lesser sentence.

The NPA welcomes the sentence, which reflects the seriousness of the offence and underscores the justice system's commitment to holding perpetrators of violent crime accountable. The successful prosecution demonstrates that those who commit senseless and brutal acts of violence will face the full might of the law.

The NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of serious and violent crimes are brought before the courts and held accountable for their actions.

Such crimes not only claim innocent lives but also inflict lasting trauma on families and communities.

NPA'S AFU SECURES PRESERVATION AND RESTRAINT ORDERS OVER R3.4MILLION IN ASSETS LINKED TO ALLEGED R9MILLION SCHOOL THEFT

KIMBERLEY, Northern Cape – The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) in Kimberley, working in collaboration with the Priority Crime Specialised Inspectorate (PCSI) of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), has successfully secured preservation and restraint orders over assets valued at approximately R3.4 million, allegedly acquired with the proceeds of a R9 million theft from a school in Kathu.

The latest development follows the granting of a restraint order by the High Court on 27 August 2026 over a residential property in Kathu valued at approximately R1.8 million, belonging to Jessica Kuhn, who is facing charges of fraud and money laundering.

This follows an earlier success on 20 August 2026, when the AFU obtained a preservation order over four motor vehicles and three caravans with a combined value of approximately R1.6 million.

Investigations revealed that some of the vehicles and caravans were registered in the names of Kuhn's family members. The investigation further established that the vehicles were purchased for cash from the same dealership in Upington over a period of approximately three weeks.

The dealership played a crucial role in assisting law enforcement authorities by providing information that contributed significantly to the tracing and identification of the assets.

Kuhn was employed as a finance clerk at Kathu High School, where she allegedly misappropriated approximately R9 million over a period of time. Investigators identified substantial cash purchases made within a relatively short period, raising concerns regarding the source of the funds, particularly in light of her employment position and apparent financial means.

Kuhn is currently facing charges of fraud and money laundering and has already been denied bail. She is expected to appear before the Kuruman Regional Court on 31 August 2026.

The preservation and restraint orders prevent the identified assets from being sold, transferred, concealed, or otherwise disposed of pending the outcome of the criminal prosecution and any subsequent forfeiture proceedings.

The AFU continues to work closely with investigative authorities to identify, trace, preserve, and recover assets believed to have been acquired through criminal activities.

These proceedings demonstrate the NPA's commitment to ensuring that crime does not pay and that those who benefit from alleged criminal conduct are deprived of the proceeds derived from such activities.

The successful preservation and restraint of these assets underscore the critical role of asset forfeiture in combating economic crime and safeguarding public resources. The NPA remains committed to using all available legal mechanisms to recover assets linked to criminal conduct and to protect the interests of affected institutions and communities.
