The Gauteng Provincial Government has intensified integrated service delivery and crime prevention interventions in Ratanda, Lesedi Local Municipality, resulting in the arrest of 938 suspects for various offences including contact crimes, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), kidnapping, drug-related crimes and other serious offences during operations conducted from Wednesday, 13 May 2026 to Thursday, 14 May 2026.

The coordinated operation forms part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s ongoing programme to strengthen law enforcement, improve service delivery and deepen cooperation between all spheres of government in communities across the province. As part of the law enforcement operations, nine convicted criminals linked to cases including murder, armed robbery, housebreaking, common assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and shoplifting were collectively sentenced to 61 years imprisonment, reaffirming government’s commitment to ensuring that criminals are removed from communities and brought to justice.

Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Metro Police Departments (MPDs), municipal traffic law enforcement units, Home Affairs and other stakeholders coordinated high-density operations aimed at combating crime, enforcing compliance and restoring law and order in Ratanda and surrounding areas. In efforts to enforce compliance with business regulations and protect public health and safety, inspections were conducted at spaza shops, liquor outlets, general dealers and informal trading stalls. Several major food and liquor establishments were closed for non-compliance with applicable regulations. Beyond law enforcement, integrated teams from municipal, provincial and national government departments implemented a range of service delivery interventions aimed at improving living conditions within the community.

These interventions included grass cutting, pothole repairs, road markings, storm water and road maintenance, waste collection and the clearing of illegal dumping sites. As part of government’s ongoing School Safety Programme, learner support and safety awareness activities were conducted at Kgoro ya Thuto Secondary School and Kganya Lesedi Secondary School. The engagements focused on challenges affecting schools and learners including substance abuse, bullying, violence, learner absenteeism and social ill-discipline, while promoting safer and more conducive learning environments. Residents also accessed a wide range of integrated government services during the operation.

These included healthcare services and screenings provided by Ratanda Clinic, social support services, substance abuse awareness and rehabilitation support programmes, as well as other community wellness initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of residents. The programme concluded with a Safety and Service Delivery Imbizo which provided residents with an opportunity to engage directly with government leadership and officials on issues affecting the community.

The Imbizo strengthened collaboration between government and the people of Ratanda, while enabling residents to raise service delivery concerns and contribute practical solutions towards the development of their community.

The Gauteng Provincial Government remains committed to building safer communities, improving service delivery and ensuring that residents across the province have access to responsive, integrated and peoplecentred government services through a coordinated intergovernmental approach.

ANC WELCOMES PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA’S DECISIVE ACTION

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to remove Comrade Sisisi Tolashe as Minister of Social Development in line with his constitutional responsibilities and commitment to ethical governance

The ANC further welcomes the appointment of Comrade Sindisiwe Chikunga as Acting Minister to ensure continuity, stability and uninterrupted service delivery in this critical portfolio. This decisive intervention once again demonstrates the seriousness with which the ANC and President Cyril Ramaphosa approach the fight against corruption, maladministration and ethical lapses within the state.

Under President Ramaphosa’s leadership, the fight against corruption has moved beyond rhetoric into concrete action through strengthened law enforcement institutions, the signing of numerous SIU proclamations, support for independent investigations, and the implementation of organisational renewal processes aimed at building a capable, ethical and developmental state.

The President continues to lead from the front in ensuring accountability, transparency and consequence management across government.

The ANC remains resolute that public representatives and deployees of the movement must at all times embody the values, discipline and mission of the organisation, guided by selfless service to the people and unwavering commitment to transformation.

The movement will continue to support decisive leadership that protects the integrity of public institutions and advances the interests of the people of South Africa.

Citrus Industry South Africa becomes World's Top Exporter

Citrus Industry South Africa becomes World's Top Exporter

Minister John Steenhuisen congratulates citrus industry as South Africa becomes world's top exporter

The Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, is immensely proud to congratulate every farmer, farm worker, and value-chain partner whose tireless dedication has enabled South Africa to officially overtake Spain as the world’s largest exporter of citrus by volume, with 2.9 million tons exported in 2025.

“This great achievement is one that should be celebrated by all South Africans. To overtake a citrus export giant like Spain, even by a small margin, is no easy feat. We are known for our world-class quality fruit and strict compliance with international plant health standards,” Minister Steenhuisen said.

While celebrating this growth, Minister Steenhuisen also noted that these figures reflect a unique set of global dynamics.

While South Africa leads in export volume, countries such as China, Brazil, and Spain continue to dominate in terms of total production, focusing heavily on their domestic markets.

Furthermore, the 2025 shift occurred as Spanish producers navigated increasingly complex climatic conditions.

Minister Steenhuisen emphasised that South Africa and Spain play complementary roles in the global market. Spain anchors the Northern Hemisphere season, while South Africa ensures continuity during the summer months. This seasonal coordination ensures that consumers worldwide have year-round access to fresh citrus, thereby maintaining category stability and shelf presence.

Minister Steenhuisen also lauded the Citrus Growers Association (CGA) for their strategic leadership in navigating a period of significant volatility and reaffirmed the Department of Agriculture’s commitment to expanding market access and reducing the cost of trade.

“Our production growth must be met with intensified diplomacy and infrastructure support,” he added. “We are continuously looking for new market opportunities while working to ensure that we expand our current markets,” Minister Steenhuisen concluded.
