Thirty-one-year-old Sizwe Nkululeko Yende appeared before the Protea Magistrates’ Court in connection with the alleged murder of 22-year-old Botshelo Mabua in Rockville, Soweto.

Yende faces a charge of murder following Mabua's death at a residence on 25 September 2026.

The State alleges that, during the early hours of the morning, the accused and the deceased became involved in a verbal altercation which escalated into violence. It is alleged that Yende pushed the deceased, causing her to strike her head against a corner. During the ensuing struggle, he allegedly strangled her, resulting in her death.

The deceased was later found lying on the floor inside the residence and was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Following investigations, Yende was arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

The matter was postponed to 02 October 2026 for a formal bail application. The accused remains in custody pending further court proceedings.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) remains steadfast in its commitment to combating gender-based violence and ensuring that perpetrators of crimes against women are held accountable. The NPA will continue to prosecute this matter vigorously and without fear, favour, or prejudice in pursuit of justice for the victim and her loved ones.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the sentence imposed by the Nelspruit Sexual Offences Court on 35-year-old serial rapist, Mxolisi Simon Khoza. Khoza was sentenced to a cumulative 73 years' imprisonment following his conviction on two counts of rape, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and one count of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The offences were committed in Pienaar, outside Nelspruit, during May 2023.

The victims, who did not know their attacker, reported the incidents to the police, leading to investigations that ultimately resulted in Khoza's arrest and conviction.

In the first incident, which occurred on 05 May 2023, a 22-year-old woman was at home preparing breakfast at approximately 08:00 while caring for a three-year-old child. Khoza entered the house wearing a balaclava and armed with a knife. He threatened to kill the victim if she resisted. When she screamed for help, he tied her hands with wire before raping her. He covered the child with a blanket and used the victim's T-shirt to cover her face before fleeing the scene. He stole a Premo X85 cellphone valued at approximately R1 500 and coins worth less than R10. The victim was subsequently taken to the Rob Ferreira Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she received medical treatment and psychosocial support.

In the second incident, which occurred on 26 May 2023, a 29-year-old woman was waiting alone for a taxi when Khoza approached her from behind and stabbed her in the left foot. He threatened to kill her if she continued screaming and forcibly dragged her to a nearby graveyard, where he raped her on top of a grave. He then robbed her of R1 200 in cash and a Samsung A23 cellphone valued at approximately R4 000 before fleeing the scene.

DNA evidence linked Khoza to both offences. The forensic evidence proved instrumental in strengthening the State's case and ultimately led to his arrest and successful prosecution.

Faced with overwhelming evidence against him, including the DNA results, Khoza pleaded guilty to all charges.

In aggravation of sentence, State Prosecutor John Mahlwele argued that Khoza posed a danger to society and that gender-based violence remains a scourge in South Africa. He submitted that the accused deliberately targeted vulnerable women who were alone and defenceless, demonstrating a complete disregard for their dignity, bodily integrity, and safety. Mahlwele further argued that only a lengthy term of direct imprisonment would adequately protect society and deter would-be offenders.

The court sentenced Khoza to 15 years' imprisonment on the first count of rape, 15 years' imprisonment on each count of robbery with aggravating circumstances, 23 years' imprisonment on the second count of rape, and five years' imprisonment for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The court ordered that the sentences on counts 1, 2, 4, and 5 run concurrently with the sentence imposed on count 3, resulting in an effective sentence of 23 years' direct imprisonment. The court further declared Khoza unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to combating gender-based violence and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences are held accountable for their actions. Through the Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs), led by the NPA's Sexual Offences and Community Affairs (SOCA) Unit, victims of gender-based violence and sexual offences are provided with integrated support services under one roof.

These centres offer immediate medical care, forensic examinations, trauma counselling, and other essential victim-support services aimed at reducing secondary victimisation, strengthening criminal justice responses, and improving conviction rates.

The NPA commends all role players involved in securing this conviction and sentence and continues to encourage victims and members of the public to report incidents of sexual violence so that offenders are brought to justice and communities are made safer.

The Pretoria Regional  Court postponed the case against Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and 15 others  to 17 November 2026, for the Review Panel to complete its assessment on the validity of the charges against the accused and for the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) to issue an instruction on the way forward.

This forms part of the IDAC Reset Project which includes the review of all cases by a Review Panel comprised of senior prosecutors from the NPA as well as senior attorneys from the SIU. This process is undertaken to ensure that all prescripts of the law were followed and to assess if the evidence contained meet the minimum threshold for convictions.

The accused face charges of corruption arising from the alleged irregular awarding of a contract valued at approximately R228 million to Medicare 24 Tshwane District, a company owned by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The National Prosecuting Authority, through IDAC, is committed in ensuring that all prescripts of the law are adhered to when bringing perpetrators of corruption to book.

NPA ADDS THREE MORE ACCUSED TO R11 MILLION DECEASED ESTATES FRAUD AND MONEY LAUNDERING CASE

POLOKWANE – Three additional accused, Rirhandzu Tibana (30), Jabulani Nephtal Maluleke(43), and Risima Jeje Trading Enterprise (Pty) Ltd, appeared briefly before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court and were joined as co-accused with Charlotte Tibana and Peter Nonyane Gagashe. They are collectively facing 101 charges, including fraud, theft, and money laundering.

The State alleges that accused 1, Charlotte Tibana, who owns several properties, registered some of these properties in the name of her younger sibling, Rirhandzu Tibana (accused 3), to conceal the proceeds of alleged criminal activities. It is further alleged that she transferred funds into the business account of Risima Jeje Trading Enterprise (Pty) Ltd.

The charges arise from allegations relating to the administration of 15 deceased estates for which Charlotte Tibana had been appointed as executor. The State alleges that despite becoming aware as early as 2024 that she was under investigation, she continued to commit further offences, including some allegedly committed as recently as July 2026.

All the accused were arrested between 14 August 2026 and 27 September 2026 following an extensive investigation into the alleged unlawful withdrawal and laundering of funds from deceased estates. According to the State's case, the accused unlawfully concealed or disguised the nature, source, location, disposition, and movement of approximately R11 million withdrawn from estate accounts belonging to various deceased persons.

The State further alleges that approximately R1.65 million of the proceeds was used to purchase a pre-owned Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 from a dealership in Pretoria. It is also alleged that Peter Nonyane Gagashe used part of the proceeds to make stokvel contributions and to build a residential property.

In a separate estate matter valued at R4 245 762.04, the State alleges that only R1 470 000 was paid to the deceased's children, while the balance was unlawfully misappropriated. It is further alleged that accused 1 and accused 4 used the business account of accused 4 to launder the proceeds.

The matter was postponed to 02 October 2026 for a bail application. All accused remain in custody.

Vioolsdrift, Northern Cape – The Springbok Regional Court has sentenced 36-year-old Brian Klaase to 15 years' imprisonment for the murder of 25-year-old Reagan Austin Losper following a dispute over money that had been entrusted to the deceased to purchase cigarettes.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Northern Cape Division, welcomes the sentence following the successful prosecution of Klaase for the unlawful killing of Losper in Vioolsdrift, a small town near the Namibian border.

The court heard that Klaase and Losper knew one another and both resided in Vioolsdrift. On 27 April 2024, the two men were near a local shop when an argument erupted. Klaase demanded to know what had happened to the money he had given Losper to buy cigarettes. Losper told him that he no longer had the money.

Angered by the response, Klaase produced a knife and repeatedly stabbed Losper without warning. The deceased attempted to defend himself by blocking the blows but was unable to prevent the attack and sustained multiple stab wounds.

Losper managed to flee and ran towards the police station. Klaase pursued him until the deceased's brother intervened by throwing stones at the accused to stop the attack. Klaase then retreated towards the shop and threatened bystanders, warning them that they would also be harmed if they spoke about the incident.

Meanwhile, Losper, having lost a substantial amount of blood, became weak and collapsed on the N7 National Road. He succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the deceased sustained a penetrating stab wound to the base of the right side of his neck, causing damage to the right subclavian vein, as well as injuries to the thoracic cavity and right lung. The cause of death was determined to be a stab wound to the neck.

Following the incident, members of the community confronted Klaase and attempted to assault him. He subsequently handed himself over to the police. After his arrest, he abandoned his bail application and remained in custody until the finalisation of the matter.

The court further heard that Klaase disposed of the murder weapon and the T-shirt he had been wearing during the incident by throwing them into a river.

In admissions made before the court, Klaase acknowledged that he stabbed Losper because he was angry. He conceded that he was not acting in self-defence and that his life was not in danger when he attacked the deceased. He further admitted that, although he did not directly intend to kill Losper, he knew that stabbing him in the way he did could result in death.

Klaase also acknowledged that he was fully aware of his actions and understood that his conduct was unlawful and punishable by law.

In aggravation of sentence, Regional Court Prosecutor Basil Kock argued that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances justifying a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence of 15 years' imprisonment.

The court agreed with the State's submissions and imposed the prescribed sentence of 15 years' direct imprisonment.

This sentence demonstrates that acts of violence, particularly those arising from seemingly trivial disputes, can have irreversible and devastating consequences.

The NPA remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of serious violent crimes are brought before the courts and that the interests of victims, their families, and affected communities are properly placed before the courts for consideration.

Pretoria - The Board of Trustees of the Independent Development Trust (IDT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Sifiso Nsibande as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Independent Development Trust, effective 1 October 2026, following the successful conclusion of a comprehensive and competitive recruitment and selection process.

Having served as Acting Chief Executive Officer for almost a year, Mr Nsibande successfully guided the organisation through a critical period, providing stable and strategic leadership while strengthening governance, enhancing organisational performance, rebuilding stakeholder confidence and ensuring the continued implementation of the IDT's mandate. His appointment provides continuity, stability and stability, positioning the organisation to build on the progress achieved during his tenure.

Mr Nsibande is a seasoned finance, governance and infrastructure executive with more than two decades of impactful leadership experience across the public and private sectors. Prior to joining the IDT, he served as Chief Financial Officer of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), where he played a key role in strengthening the organisation's financial sustainability and governance. Under his financial leadership, the CIDB consistently achieved unqualified audit outcomes, culminating in a clean audit for the 2023/24 and 2025/2026 financial years, while significantly improving the organisation's financial position through disciplined fiscal management and sound governance.

Ms. Zimbini Hill, Chairperson of the IDT Board of Trustees, remarked, “The appointment of our new CEO comes at a critical stage for the entity. She said that “Mr Nsibande’s leadership as Acting CEO has already resulted in tangible improvements in the organisation and his successful track record at CIDB, particularly in delivering a clean audit, gives us every confidence that the IDT is on the path to achieving similar results.”

The Chairperson extended her sincere appreciation to the Board of Trustees for its leadership and stewardship throughout the appointment process, and to the Acting Chief Executive Officer for accepting the secondment in support of the organisation’s continuity and stability.

The Board is confident that Mr Nsibande's proven record of achieving clean governance, strengthening financial sustainability and driving institutional performance positions him well to lead the Independent Development Trust into its next chapter. His appointment signals the organisation's continued commitment to sound governance, improved audit outcomes, operational excellence and the delivery of sustainable social infrastructure that improves the lives of all South Africans.

SACP calls for the reinstatement of General Masemola

KASiBCAFRiCA©®™
BY: CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS | ONLINE EDITOR

The South African Communist Party (SACP) calls for the immediate reinstatement of General Fannie Masemola as the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, following the withdrawal of all the trumped-up charges proffered against him by the National Prosecuting Authority under the Public Finance Management Act on 15 September.

Following extensive reviews of Masemola’s case, the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) found that there were no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution against Masemola on those charges and subsequently issued instructions that the charges be withdrawn.

Accordingly, the SACP welcomes the findings by the NDPP and reiterates that the next logical step is his reinstatement so that he may continue with his work in service of the people of South Africa. From the outset, the SACP saw the charges as concocted, as they reflected the hallmarks of abuse of power, and this abuse must itself be investigated and addressed. Those who charged Masemola either lacked capacity insofar as the law was concerned, which led to his charging, in which case they were incompetent and should be discharged of their duties by virtue of their incompetence, or were fully competent and aware of the law but nonetheless went ahead and participated in the abuse thereof – and thus must face the full might of the law for their intentional unlawful conduct.

The SACP remains deeply concerned with the state of the South African Police Service and the concomitant crisis of security facing the country. We remain positive that the role played by the ongoing Madlanga Commission will yield dividends to the public. Already, the Commission has laid bare the systematic and structural crisis in the security cluster. In light of these revelations, the SACP makes the further call for a wide-ranging overhaul of the justice system beyond just the administration of the police. It is crucial to understand that crime and corruption have reached crisis levels in our country. For many years, the people have suffered under the scourge of organised criminal networks, some of which operate with the complicity of corrupt elements within the state, which continue to dominate large sections of our nation.

This and others are some of the crimes that General Masemola must pursue as soon as he retakes the reins. While we call for the urgent reinstatement of General Masemola, we are not unalive to the limitations within our criminal justice system. This undermines the work of our police service. It is in this regard that we reiterate our call for the full resourcing and transforming of the police and criminal justice system to serve the people, with particular reinforcement in townships and rural communities, the most impacted by the incidence of crime. Additionally, forensic audits must be undertaken to expose and root out captured elements within the state, while austerity policies that cripple law enforcement must be fought against until the end.

All office bearers, officials and officers in law enforcement must be held stringently accountable for failures and corruption.

MK PARTY OPENS A CRIMINAL CASE OVER ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION IN THE JUDICIARY

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (“MK Party”) has, today, opened a criminal case concerning allegaEons of corrupEon involving acEng Johannesburg High Court Judge Samuel Makamu. The case was opened at Boksburg North Police StaEon, at 17:00.

The MK Party is taking this step amid allegaEons that Judge Makamu solicited money in connecEon with an applicaEon for leave to appeal. The allegaEons are already the subject of a judicial-conduct process, with the maSer having been referred for further invesEgaEon.

The Party believes that allegaEons of corrupEon involving judicial officers must be taken seriously and subjected to proper invesEgaEon by the relevant law-enforcement and judicial authoriEes.

The allegaEons against Judge Makamu include a claim that an amount of R5,000 was paid in connecEon with an applicaEon for leave to appeal. Evidence submiSed in the judicial-conduct complaint reportedly includes WhatsApp communicaEons and banking records. Judge Makamu disputes the allegaEons.

The MK Party emphasises that it is not declaring Judge Makamu guilty. The purpose of opening the criminal case is to place the allegaEons before the appropriate lawenforcement authoriEes so that they can be invesEgated and determined in accordance with the law.

The integrity and independence of the judiciary are essenEal to consEtuEonal democracy. Where credible allegaEons arise concerning the possible misuse of judicial office, they must be invesEgated transparently, fairly and without fear or favour.

The MK Party calls on Judge Makamu to step aside for the duraEon of the invesEgaEon and urges a thorough and imparEal inquiry into the allegaEons. Should any criminal conduct be established, those responsible must be held accountable.

THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WOMEN’S LEAGUE (ANCWL) RESPONSE TO THE PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS ON GBVF AND EKURHULENI MURDERS

KASiBCAFRiCA©®™ BY: CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS | ONLINE EDITOR

BREAKING NEWS

The ANC Women’s League welcomes the address by the President of the Republic of South Africa, whose leadership reflects a government and an Office of the President committed to standing with the people, sharing their pain and supporting them through their grief.

In his address to the nation, the President outlined key priority areas and timeframes for addressing the ongoing and merciless killing of women in Ekurhuleni, Rustenburg and elsewhere across the country. However, we must register our disappointment with law enforcement agencies that, at this stage, the public has been informed only of “persons of interest”.

It is an indictment of our justice system that, despite the killings in Ekurhuleni and Rustenburg continuing for more than two months, the nation has yet to receive scientific evidence that may help establish their cause or identify those responsible.

The ANC Women’s League will not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice and convicted. These incidents reinforce our long-held call for a frank and honest national debate, one that may include a referendum on the reintroduction of the death penalty.

Our Constitution was founded on consensus among South Africans. Yet women continue to be mercilessly killed, while the Constitution is often portrayed as protecting murderers and rapists. This demands urgent, thoughtful discussion about how we can better protect women and ensure justice for victims.

The ANC Women’s League remains steadfast in our resolve to be the voice of the voiceless and fight for the total emancipation and full liberation of women
