Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport Temporarily Suspends Three Key GPTRIS Requirements

Johannesburg — In a major development for the public transport sector, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has announced the immediate temporary suspension of three specific requirements under the Gauteng Public Transport Regulatory Information System (GPTRIS). The suspension will remain in effect for six months, lapsing on 30 April 2027, to allow for stakeholder engagement and comprehensive awareness campaigns.

Addressing Industry Concerns

The decision follows extensive representations and concerns raised by various public transport sectors—including scholar transport, metered taxis, and e-hailing services—as well as major industry bodies like the Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA) and the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO).

Stakeholders had petitioned the department for a grace period and consultation phase prior to the full implementation of these requirements within the newly automated licensing system. After weighing operational implications and legal considerations, the Department accommodated these requests.

Specific Requirements Suspended

The six-month moratorium applies exclusively to the following three application conditions:

 * Police Clearance Certificates: The mandatory submission of police clearance certificates by applicants seeking public transport operating licences.

 * Labour Law Compliance Undertaking: The requirement for a formal undertaking confirming commitment to provisions under the Labour Relations Act.

 * Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs): The requirement compelling operating licence owners who do not personally drive public transport vehicles (exclusive business/licence owners) to hold a PrDP.

Directives for TOLABs and Future Outlook

Transport Operating Licence Administration Boards (TOLABs) have been officially directed to process applications without requiring compliance with these three items until the suspension ends.

The Department has stressed that the suspension is strictly limited to these three areas and does not constitute a broader exemption from other statutory, regulatory, or administrative obligations governing public transport operating licences.

During this grace period, Gauteng will collaborate with national and provincial counterparts to standardise and streamline uniform operating licence application requirements across all public transport modes. Strict monitoring and enforcement will resume following the expiration of the suspension on 30 April 2027.

LET US NOT FORGET #BLACKWEDNESDAY

A PUBLIC STATEMENT TO JOURNALISTS, PRESENTERS, MEDIA OWNERS AND THE MEDIA COMMUNITY

Dear Journalists, Presenters, Media Owners and Fellow Members of the Media,

There comes a time when silence is no longer an option. Today, I believe it is necessary to share my account of what allegedly happened at family home following an incident at a public government event in Eldorado Park.

This is not merely about me. It raises serious questions about press freedom, the safety of journalists, the protection of private property and the right of independent media to report on public events without intimidation.

1. THE GOVERNMENT EVENT AT DON MATEMAN HALL

Earlier that day, KASiBC_AFRiCA was invited by the Mayor's Office to attend a government event at Don Mateman Hall in Eldorado Park.

We attended in our capacity as a media organisation, alongside other media representatives, including Eldos FM.

During the event, members of the Patriotic Alliance (PA) allegedly approached me and demanded that I stop recording a public event taking place at a public venue.

I found this particularly concerning because other media representatives were also recording the proceedings.

I chose not to comply with their demand. In my view, attending and documenting a public government event was part of our responsibility as a media organisation.

The event eventually concluded, and I left without engaging further with those who had confronted me.

2. THREE HOURS LATER — WHAT HAPPENED AT HOME?

After the event, I visited family and friends in the area, including people in Kliptown.

Approximately three hours later, I returned to the house where my wife and children were present.

As I approached, I noticed several vehicles and a group of people outside. When I reached the gate, I saw that my wife was already distressed and in tears.

I entered the property and sat on the stoep, just a short distance from the gate.

According to my recollection, a phone call was made announcing my arrival. Shortly afterwards, the group grew considerably, reaching what I estimated to be approximately 20 to 25 people.

I allege that members of this group, whom I identified as including PA members and three PA councillors — Juwaira Kaldine, Dwayne Ponsenby and Theo Dolly — entered the private property without my permission and assaulted me in front of my wife and children.

I further allege that members of the group attempted to take my cellphone to delete the videos I had recorded at the public event.

The footage was important to me because it documented an event that had taken place in public.

My question is simple: why should a journalist face intimidation or violence for recording a public government event?

3. THE ARRIVAL OF THE POLICE

What happened next raised further questions for me.

After, in my account, attempts to provoke me into fighting back had failed, another phone call was made. Within approximately two minutes, five police vans and a police Quantum vehicle arrived at the property.

I later understood that some police vehicles had allegedly been waiting around the corner before I arrived home.

If that information is accurate, it raises serious questions about what the police knew, when they knew it and why officers were positioned nearby.

At that stage, I questioned why such a substantial police presence appeared so quickly, particularly given the circumstances I had witnessed.

I was subsequently arrested and detained. I maintain that I was arrested without a legitimate basis. I also allege that this was the second time within 30 days that I had been arrested and detained by officers associated with Eldorado Park Police Station without proper justification.

These are serious allegations that deserve an independent, evidence-based investigation. I believe the circumstances surrounding the incident, the police response and my subsequent arrests should be examined, including whether any officers acted improperly.

4. ALLEGATIONS OF INTIMIDATION AND THREATS AGAINST MY FAMILY

I also wish to place on record my concerns about what I experienced as a broader campaign of intimidation.

I allege that Gayton McKenzie attacked my wife on social media and that individuals I associated with his security team, whom I identified as Vicky Fly and Dirty Kids, were instructed to pursue or intimidate my family over a period of months.

These allegations require careful investigation and corroboration.

According to my account, the central demand made of me was that I stop publishing negative commentary about Gayton McKenzie, Kenny Kunene and members of the Patriotic Alliance.

I have also previously challenged attempts to silence me through legal proceedings at the High Court in Cape Town. My position remains that disagreements over journalism, political commentary or criticism must be addressed through lawful means, not intimidation or violence.

I am setting out my account so that the relevant people, institutions and members of the media can examine the allegations and seek answers.

5. A WARNING TO THE MEDIA COMMUNITY

To journalists, presenters, broadcasters, photographers, independent publishers and media owners across South Africa:

What happens to one journalist/presenter/media owners can become a warning to every journalist/presenter/media owners

If members/owners of the media can be threatened for recording a public event, and if those threats allegedly follow them to their homes, then the issue extends far beyond a personal dispute.

It becomes a question of whether independent journalism can operate freely and safely in our democracy.

I urge fellow media professionals to take reasonable precautions when covering politically sensitive events. Keep original footage and backups, document threats, preserve messages and other evidence, share your itinerary with trusted colleagues, and seek legal assistance when necessary.

I do not ask journalists/presenters/media owners to accept every allegation without scrutiny. I ask that we refuse to ignore serious allegations simply because they are uncomfortable or politically sensitive.

6. QUESTIONS THAT DESERVE ANSWERS

I believe the following questions must be addressed:

- Why was I allegedly confronted over recording a public government event?

- What happened at the private property, and who was responsible for any unlawful conduct?

- What was the basis for the police deployment and my arrest?

- Were any police officers informed of the incident in advance, and, if so, by whom?

- Were my rights and the safety of my wife and children adequately protected?

- Have the relevant allegations been independently investigated?

These questions should be answered through evidence, proper procedures and transparent accountability.

7. I WILL NOT ABANDON MY RIGHT TO SPEAK

For the record, I remain committed to independent journalism and the right to scrutinise public figures, political organisations and those entrusted with public power.

Criticism is not a licence for violence. Political affiliation does not place anyone above the law. Equally, allegations against any person must be investigated fairly, and everyone concerned must have an opportunity to respond.

My family should never have to experience fear because of my work as a journalist/presenter/media owner

My commitment to reporting, asking difficult questions , small nyanya questions and expressing my views remains.

LET #BLACKWEDNESDAY BE REMEMBERED

To my fellow journalists and media owners: let this be a call for solidarity, responsible reporting and the protection of independent media and black owned media

Do not allow intimidation to become normalised. Do not abandon colleagues who raise serious concerns. Demand accountability through lawful, peaceful and evidence-based action.

The freedom to report must not end at the gate of one's home.

Journalism is not a Crime. Asking questions is not a crime. Holding those in Power accountable is not a Crime.

Let us protect our families, safeguard our evidence, support one another and insist that the law applies equally to everyone.

Unlocking Limpopo's Industrial Potential: The Rise of the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Special Economic Zone

STEELPOORT, LIMPOPO — In a decisive push to reshape South Africa's economic trajectory and move away from exporting raw minerals, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau delivered a compelling keynote address at the ministerial engagement on the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Special Economic Zone (FTSEZ).

Held at the Samancor Chrome Club in Steelpoort, Sekhukhune District, the gathering brought together key stakeholders, including Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, Her Majesty Queen Leganabatho II Manyaku Thulare of the Bapedi Kingship, traditional leaders, investors, and community representatives.

Shifting from Exporting Ore to Local Beneficiation

Minister Tau underscored a central paradox in South Africa's economy: despite possessing globally significant reserves of platinum group metals, chrome, manganese, vanadium, titanium, iron ore, and battery minerals, the country has spent over a century exporting raw and semi-finished minerals while importing the finished products made from them.

"For generations, wealth has been taken out of this land. For too long, the value left with the ore, the processing happened elsewhere, and the skilled jobs were created elsewhere," Minister Tau stated.

Strategically situated in the Steelpoort industrial hub between the Lion Ferrochrome and Samancor Ferrochrome smelters, the FTSEZ is purpose-built to reverse this trend. Designated on May 22, 2026, the Zone spans approximately 1,010 hectares of land secured through a lease agreement with the Dithamaga Trust. It aims to anchor mineral processing, metal fabrication, manufacturing, and renewable energy initiatives. The investment pipeline is projected to reach R52.6 billion, supporting roughly 8,000 jobs in the short to medium term and up to 20,000 jobs over a ten-year period.

Progress on Infrastructure and Institutional Frameworks

Significant groundwork has already been laid to transition the Zone from concept to reality:

Regulatory Approvals: Township establishment has been approved, and the Zone has secured its environmental authorisation via a Record of Decision.

Phase 1 Development: Spanning approximately 75 hectares, site clearance is complete, perimeter fencing is 95% complete, and guardhouse construction stands at 65% complete.

Governance Model: A quadripartite agreement ensures shared participation and equal 25% stakes across national government (the dtic), the Limpopo Provincial Government, the Sekhukhune District Municipality, and the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality. Finalising the FTSEZ Board remains an immediate priority for effective governance.

Financial & Technical Backing: The Limpopo Provincial Government is funding operational costs and has committed R445 million toward bulk infrastructure. The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) is providing implementation support, while Eskom advances electricity designs, and bulk water and stormwater plans progress toward finalization.

An 8-Point Plan for Accountability and Execution

To maintain momentum, Minister Tau outlined an 8-point action plan for stakeholders:

Governance: Finalise the FTSEZ Board without delay to lock in shared accountability.

Infrastructure: Establish an integrated schedule for power, water, roads, and sanitation with strict deadlines.

Funding: Finalize a complete, technically sound application to the dtic's SEZ Fund with DBSA collaboration.

Investor Conversion: Draft precise project milestones for each of the nine Phase 1 investors to eliminate roadblocks.

Monitoring and Reporting: Deploy a centralized implementation dashboard to track infrastructure, funding, job creation, and local procurement.

Mining-House Partnership: Engage smelting and mining companies on commercial beneficiation, local supply chains, and anchor investments.

Skills and Community Participation: Form practical partnerships for youth training, SMME development, and local recruitment.

Inclusive Growth for Sekhukhune Communities

Emphasizing that growth must be shared, Minister Tau called on mining houses to open their supply chains to local manufacturers and urged that local enterprises, transport operators, and artisans be integrated into the value chain. Collaborations with educational institutions like Sekhukhune TVET College, the University of Limpopo, and the Tshwane University of Technology will be vital in equipping local youth with the skills demanded by incoming investors.

"This Zone must not be something you watch from outside the fence," Minister Tau concluded. "Let us make Steelpoort known not only for what lies beneath the ground, but for what we build on top of it."

New Police Station Opens in Bakenberg to Boost Community Safety and Frontline Policing

WATERBERG DISTRICT, LIMPOPO — The South African Police Service (SAPS) has officially expanded its footprint in Limpopo with the opening of the new Bakenberg Police Station in the Mogalakwena Local Municipality. National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, led the official opening ceremony on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, alongside Deputy Minister of Police Dr Polly Boshielo, Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety Ms Kekana, and local municipal leadership.

The commissioning of the facility marks a significant step forward in the State's commitment to improving access to frontline policing services in rural and township communities.

Bringing Services Closer to the People

Addressing dignitaries, community members, and law enforcement personnel, General Masemola emphasized that a police station represents a vital promise to the public.

"A police station is far more than a physical structure; it is a tangible expression of the State's commitment to protecting its people," General Masemola stated. "It represents a promise that when communities need protection, assistance or justice, the State will be present, accessible and ready to serve."

The new facility aims to strengthen operational capacity in the Waterberg District, creating a safer environment where residents can live and work without the constant fear of crime.

A Call for Integrity and Professionalism

While welcoming the new infrastructure, the National Commissioner cautioned that buildings alone cannot deter criminality. He stressed that the true value of the station depends on the professionalism of its personnel, uncompromising discipline, and the trust it builds with locals.

General Masemola issued a stern warning against corruption and the abuse of authority within the ranks, noting that the police uniform symbolizes public trust.

Enforcing Accountability: Station management has been tasked with leading with absolute integrity and dealing decisively with any allegations of misconduct.

Zero Tolerance: "No rank, relationship or circumstance must place anyone above the law," Masemola underscored.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

Sustainable crime prevention was a central theme of the proceedings, with the National Commissioner calling for active collaboration between law enforcement, Community Policing Forums (CPFs), traditional leaders, local businesses, and schools.

Residents of Bakenberg were urged to work hand-in-hand with police by reporting criminal activities and sharing intelligence. In return, police members are expected to respond promptly, treat victims with dignity, and prioritize heavy-burden crimes such as violent offenses, gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), drug-related crimes, and robberies.

Festive Season and Election Readiness

With the launch coinciding with the intensification of Safer Festive Season operations, the Bakenberg facility is expected to immediately contribute to visible policing, illegal firearm recoveries, and the execution of outstanding warrants.

Furthermore, police leadership highlighted early preparations for upcoming Local Government Elections. The SAPS reiterated its constitutional mandate to provide a secure environment for democratic participation, calling on political parties and community members to reject intimidation and resolve disputes peacefully.

Concluding the ceremony, General Masemola urged both the police and the local community to safeguard the new public asset against vandalism, reminding attendees that the station's ultimate success will be measured by crimes prevented, cases thoroughly investigated, and public confidence restored.
