COMMUNITY SAFETY COMMITTEE CALLS FOR ZERO TOLERANCE AS ELDORADO PARK MAN RECEIVES TWO LIFE SENTENCES FOR RAPE & MURDER

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has welcomed the two life sentences handed down by the Johannesburg High Court to a 34-year-old Eldorado Park man for the rape and murder of his four-year-old daughter, describing the sentence as a strong message that crimes against women and children must be met with the full might of the law.

The man, who pleaded guilty to murder, two counts of rape, child abuse, assault and resisting arrest, committed an appalling crime against a child who depended on him for protection. The Committee has condemned the brutality of the crime, emphasising that there can be no place in a society that values human life and dignity for those who prey on the most vulnerable.

The sentence must serve as a stern warning to anyone who believes they can commit heinous crimes against women and children and escape accountability.

The murder and rape of a four-year-old child by her own father is an act of unimaginable cruelty and a profound betrayal of the most basic responsibility to protect a child. Such crimes are an affront to our humanity and cannot be tolerated in any civilised society.

The sentence handed down must send an unequivocal message that anyone who commits such atrocities will face the full consequences of their actions. No one is above the law and no child should ever have to suffer such violence.

The Committee applauds the police officers who investigated the case and the prosecution team that secured the outcome, commending their work in ensuring that the perpetrator was brought before the courts and held accountable.

The Committee stressed that effective investigations, diligent prosecution and decisive judicial action are essential in the fight against gender-based violence and crimes against children.

The Committee further calls for continued cooperation among law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, communities and social services to strengthen the protection of children and ensure that perpetrators face justice.

On a separate matter, the Committee has commended law enforcement officers for their continued efforts to disrupt drug trafficking and dismantle criminal networks operating in Gauteng.

Over the past 24 months, police officers have reportedly arrested 112 suspected drug mules at OR Tambo International Airport. Authorities have also intercepted five luggage bags containing 216 blocks of cocaine weighing approximately 250 kilograms, with an estimated street value exceeding R200 million.

These efforts, alongside the recent discovery of a multimillion-rand drug manufacturing laboratory on a farm in Krugersdorp, demonstrate the importance of intelligence-led policing and sustained action against the drug trade.

The Committee has expressed concern about the devastating impact of drugs on communities, particularly the harm caused to young people and the role that drug trafficking can play in fuelling other forms of criminality.

These operations are encouraging developments in the fight against the proliferation of drugs, but the Committee would like to emphases that law enforcement agencies must maintain the pressure on those who manufacture, distribute and profit from illegal substances.

Every major drug seizure and every criminal network dismantled represents an opportunity to protect our communities and prevent more young people from falling victim to substance abuse.

We commend the officers involved in these operations, but the work cannot stop here. Those who profit from destroying lives must be pursued, arrested and brought before the courts. We need sustained operations that target not only drug couriers, but also the networks and individuals financing and organising this trade.

COSATU’s 15th National Congress Ushers in Historic Leadership, Spotlighting Women Empowerment and Working-Class Unity

JOHANNESBURG — The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has officially signaled a profound shift in its leadership architecture, following the conclusion of its landmark 15th National Congress. Meeting under the militant banner of "Building a militant, Revolutionary Labour Movement and Strengthening Anti-imperialist Working-class Unity to Defend Jobs and Advance Socialism," the congress brought together 1,840 delegates representing 1.5 million organized workers across South Africa.

Chief among the historical takeaways from the mid-October gathering is a transformative gender shift within the federation’s highest echelons. Women now constitute an overwhelming 67% of the newly elected National Office Bearers (NOBs). Most notably, the federation elected its first-ever female General Secretary in its 40-year history—marking a definitive stride in dismantling historical patriarchy within the labor movement.

The New National Office Bearers

The newly inducted leadership team tasked with steering COSATU through a turbulent socio-economic landscape comprises:

President: Cde Michael Madala Shingange (Male)

First Deputy President: Cde Suzan Khumalo (Female)

Second Deputy President: CdeMbali Blose (Female)

National Treasurer: Cde Kgomotso Makhopula (Female)

General Secretary: Cde Zingiswa Losi (Female)

Deputy General Secretary: Cde Gerald Mkhomazi Twala (Male)

Confronting Domestic Crises and Economic Hardship

The new leadership assumes command at a volatile economic juncture. South African workers continue to grapple with soaring unemployment, escalating living costs, deepening inequality, and the steady erosion of public service delivery.

Addressing the press, COSATU emphasized that its mandate goes far beyond rhetoric. Quoting Karl Marx’s famous thesis—"The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it"—the leadership committed to translating congress resolutions into tangible improvements for workers and grassroots communities.

Key domestic pillars of the federation's renewed campaign include:

Rejecting Austerity: Categorically opposing austerity measures that shift capitalist crises onto the shoulders of the poor and working class.

Cost-of-Living Campaign: Intensifying pressure against above-inflation tariff hikes on electricity, transport, and municipal services, alongside expanding the zero-rated food basket and establishing a dedicated workers' cost-of-living index.

Rebuilding Organizing Structures: Accelerating recruitment in fragmented, outsourced, and platform-based modern employment sectors to safeguard collective bargaining power.

Electoral Strategy and Local Government Mobilization

As South Africa barrels toward the upcoming Local Government Elections on November 4, 2026, COSATU is ramping up mobilization. Guided by its congress mandate, the federation has declared principled support for the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).

However, leadership made it clear that this support is conditional and program-driven, aimed strictly at holding elected representatives accountable to service delivery, job creation, and the material needs of working-class neighborhoods.

International Solidarity and Global Horizons

Beyond domestic borders, COSATU extended solidarity to regional and international labor movements, celebrating President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s historic victory in Brazil as a monumental win for the Global South and the BRICS bloc. The federation also sent solidarity greetings to sister bodies, including the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), reaffirming its commitment to global working-class unity against imperialism.

As COSATU marches toward its 41st anniversary on December 1, 2026, and prepares to honor founding president Comrade Elijah Barayi in January 2027, the message from the federation remains unambiguous: unity, organizational discipline, and militant action are non-negotiable prerequisites for true economic emancipation.
