Gauteng Department of Community Safety warns public against criminals impersonating Law-Enforcement Officers
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety is warning members of the public to remain vigilant following the discovery of Gauteng Traffic Police uniform at a property in Dawn Park, where a stolen Chery Tiggo 7 was also recovered.
The discovery of the Gauteng Traffic Police uniform at the property raises serious concerns that individuals linked to the syndicate may have been in possession of official-looking law-enforcement clothing and using such items to impersonate police or traffic officers.
The Department is therefore urging motorists and members of the public to exercise caution when approached by individuals claiming to be Law Enforcement Officers. Members of the public should:
•Ask for the officer's name, rank and identification details where appropriate.
•Take note of the official vehicle registration number and, where safe to do so, the location and circumstances of the encounter.
•If suspicious of the officer's identity, contact the relevant police station or emergency services to verify the encounter.
•Avoid confronting or physically challenging a person suspected of impersonating an officer.
•Never hand over personal belongings, money or vehicle documents to a person who cannot be verified as a legitimate law-enforcement official.
The Department further warns motorists and communities to exercise heightened vigilance along routes and areas believed to be targeted by the syndicate, including the N3, Zonkezizwe, N12, R101 and R103.
The Department of Community Safety commends the crime-fighting units involved in the operation for their vigilance and coordinated efforts in recovering the stolen vehicle and uncovering evidence that could assist in dismantling the suspected syndicate.
The discovery of the Gauteng Traffic Police uniform is concerning and highlights the extent to which criminals may go to facilitate their illegal activities and potentially deceive members of the public
The department further encouraged communities and motorists to remain alert and to report any suspicious behavior or information that could assist law enforcement in disrupting vehicle theft syndicates.
Members of the public must exercise caution when approached by individuals claiming to be law-enforcement officers and, where they have concerns about their legitimacy, should prioritize their safety and report the matter to the relevant authorities.
