MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS' DIRECT IMPRISONMENT FOR SETTING GIRLFRIEND ALIGHT

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has secured the conviction and sentencing of Fanyana Simon Gama (50), who has been sentenced to 20 years' direct imprisonment by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Mbombela for the murder of his girlfriend, Bonisiwe Mahlikilane Masinga (42).

The sentence follows the successful prosecution of a brutal act of domestic violence in which Gama doused the deceased with petrol and set her alight, resulting in injuries that ultimately claimed her life.

The court heard that on the night of 15 February 2025, the accused and the deceased were consuming alcohol at a neighbour's house in Lehawu Trust, Pienaar. During the night, the deceased left and was later found sleeping on the veranda of the home she shared with the accused. The following morning, an argument ensued regarding each other's whereabouts.

The accused then went to a nearby fuel station where he purchased petrol and matches. Upon his return, the argument continued. In a fit of anger, he poured petrol over the deceased and ignited it with matches.

Despite suffering extensive burn injuries, the deceased managed to flee to a neighbour's house, where she reported that the accused had poured petrol on her and set her on fire. The neighbour immediately transported her to the nearest medical facility for treatment. Although medical personnel made every effort to save her life, she succumbed to her injuries approximately one week later.

The accused was subsequently arrested. In his plea statement, he admitted that his conduct was unlawful, wrongful, and punishable by law.

He further expressed remorse for his actions and sought forgiveness from the court, the deceased's family, and the community. He also stated that after setting the deceased alight, he attempted to extinguish the flames.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that the deceased died from septic burn wound complications arising from the severe injuries she sustained during the attack.

During sentencing proceedings, Advocate Itumeleng Phatudi argued that the offence was serious and prevalent, particularly because it constituted an act of domestic violence committed against a vulnerable intimate partner.

The State submitted that courts have a responsibility to send a clear message that gender-based violence and domestic violence will not be tolerated, and that perpetrators must face the full consequences of their actions.

In imposing sentence, the court found that substantial and compelling circumstances justified a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence. The court considered the accused's personal circumstances, his cooperation with law enforcement, as well as his confession and guilty plea.

However, the court emphasised the exceptionally brutal nature of the offence, the irreparable loss suffered by the deceased's family, and the alarming prevalence of gender-based violence in society. The court consequently sentenced Gama to 20 years' direct imprisonment and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The NPA strongly condemns all forms of violence against women and children and remains steadfast in its commitment to combating gender-based violence and femicide. This conviction and sentence demonstrate the criminal justice system's resolve to hold perpetrators accountable and to secure justice for victims and their families.

Human life is sacred, and every successful prosecution of this nature reaffirms the message that those who commit such cruel and senseless acts will be brought to justice and face the full might of the law.

EQUATORIAL GUINEA FACES INTERNATIONAL SCRUTINY OVER TREATMENT OF DEPORTED MIGRANTS

MALABO, Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea has come under renewed international scrutiny following reports that police pointed firearms at migrants deported from the United States during a confrontation at a hotel in the capital, Malabo.

Reuters reported that 31 migrants were being held at a hotel when an altercation occurred over confiscated mobile phones. Witnesses and video footage reportedly showed police pointing guns at the deportees.

The incident has raised broader questions about the treatment of migrants sent to third countries under deportation arrangements.

A Controversial Arrangement

The United States has increasingly used agreements with third countries to receive migrants who are being deported but may not immediately be returned to their countries of origin.

Equatorial Guinea has become one of the countries involved in this policy.

The precise terms of the arrangement have not been publicly disclosed in full.

That lack of transparency has contributed to concerns among lawyers and human-rights advocates.

The Migrants

The group reportedly includes people from several countries.

Some migrants have said they fear persecution or other dangers if returned to their countries of origin.

Human-rights advocates argue that deported people should have access to legal assistance and protection against abuse.

The US government maintains that deportations are conducted under immigration law.

The Malabo Incident

The confrontation over mobile phones is now drawing international attention.

Witnesses said police responded aggressively, including allegedly pointing weapons at migrants.

The incident raises questions about the conditions in which deported migrants are being held.

Equatorial Guinea's political environment

Equatorial Guinea is one of Africa's longest-governed political systems.

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ruled since 1979.

The country's political environment has been criticised internationally over restrictions on political opposition and civil liberties.

Oil Wealth

Equatorial Guinea is also an oil-producing country.

Petroleum transformed the country's finances after major discoveries in the 1990s.

However, falling production and limited diversification have created economic pressure.

The government therefore faces the challenge of developing new industries.

Population and Development

Despite oil wealth, the country has a relatively small population.

Infrastructure investment has transformed parts of Malabo and Bata.

But questions remain over inequality, governance and distribution of wealth.

International Relations

The migrant controversy comes at a sensitive time for Equatorial Guinea's international relations.

The country has strategic importance because of its location in the Gulf of Guinea.

It also maintains relationships with China, the United States and other international partners.

What happens next?

International attention is likely to focus on the treatment of the deportees and the transparency of the US-Equatorial Guinea arrangement.

The central issue is whether migrants are receiving adequate protection while outside their countries of origin.

EGYPT STRENGTHENS CHINA RELATIONSHIP AS CAIRO POSITIONS ITSELF AT THE CENTRE OF AFRICA'S REGIONAL ECONOMY

CAIRO, Egypt — Egypt is strengthening its economic and strategic relationship with China as Cairo seeks investment, technology and international partnerships during a period of major geopolitical uncertainty.

Chinese President Xi Jinping made his first visit to Egypt in a decade earlier this month, meeting President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and touring the Grand Egyptian Museum.

The visit highlighted the growing importance of China-Egypt relations.

A Strategic Partnership

Egypt's location gives it enormous strategic importance.

The Suez Canal is one of the world's most important shipping routes.

The country also connects North Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

China has invested heavily in infrastructure and trade relationships across the region.

Egypt is therefore an important partner.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum has become a major symbol of Egypt's tourism ambitions.

The facility provides an enormous platform for displaying ancient Egyptian heritage.

Tourism is a critical source of foreign currency.

The sector has also faced disruptions from regional conflicts.

Egypt's ability to maintain visitor confidence is therefore economically important.

China and Technology

Technology is another major area of cooperation.

Egypt wants to expand its digital economy.

Artificial intelligence, telecommunications, data centres and advanced manufacturing could become increasingly important.

The global competition between China and the United States over artificial intelligence creates difficult choices for Cairo.

Egypt must maintain relationships with both sides.

Regional Diplomacy

Egypt continues to play a major diplomatic role in Arab and African affairs.

The country's relationship with Sudan is particularly important because of the long border between the two countries and the continuing Sudanese conflict.

Egypt also remains deeply involved in regional discussions surrounding Gaza and the wider Middle East.

Economic Pressure

Despite its strategic importance, Egypt faces major economic challenges.

Inflation, debt servicing, foreign exchange pressures and the need to create jobs for a large population remain significant concerns.

The government needs sustained investment to maintain economic growth.

Tourism

Tourism remains one of Egypt's greatest assets.

The pyramids, Nile Valley, Red Sea resorts and archaeological sites attract millions of visitors.

But the sector is sensitive to regional instability.

Infrastructure

Egypt has invested heavily in roads, railways, ports and new urban developments.

The objective is to create modern infrastructure capable of supporting a growing population and attracting international investment.

Egypt's relationship with China is likely to become increasingly important.

But Cairo is unlikely to abandon its relationships with Europe, the United States and Gulf states.

Its foreign policy is based largely on maintaining strategic flexibility.

DJIBOUTI'S STRATEGIC LOCATION BECOMES EVEN MORE IMPORTANT AS RED SEA SECURITY DETERIORATES

DJIBOUTI'S STRATEGIC LOCATION BECOMES EVEN MORE IMPORTANT AS RED SEA SECURITY DETERIORATES

DJIBOUTI - Djibouti is facing a rapidly changing security environment as renewed fighting around Yemen's Red Sea coast raises fresh concerns about one of the world's most important maritime corridors.

Djibouti sits beside the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean.

That location has made the country a major international logistics and military hub.

A Strategic Gateway

A large share of global shipping passes through the Red Sea route between Asia and Europe.

The Suez Canal connects this maritime corridor to the Mediterranean.

Any prolonged disruption can therefore affect global trade, energy prices and shipping costs.

Recent developments in Yemen have heightened those concerns.

Iran-aligned Houthi forces have reportedly seized Mayun Island in the Bab el-Mandeb and captured the nearby port city of Mokha, opening a new front in the conflict.

Djibouti's Security Role

Djibouti hosts military facilities used by several international powers.

The country has positioned itself as a security and logistics hub.

Its ports and free-trade infrastructure are also important to regional commerce.

Ethiopia, a landlocked country, relies heavily on Djibouti for international trade.

Ethiopia Connection

The economic relationship with Ethiopia is one of Djibouti's most important strategic assets.

Ethiopia's huge population creates a major market.

Djibouti's ports provide access to the sea.

The transport corridor connecting the two countries is therefore vital.

Global Competition

The country's strategic position has attracted investment from China, the United States and other international powers.

Djibouti has benefited economically from its role as a logistics hub.

But hosting foreign military facilities also creates geopolitical risks.

The government must balance relationships among competing powers.

Maritime Security

The current Yemen crisis demonstrates why Djibouti is strategically important.

If shipping routes become unsafe, insurers increase premiums and vessels may divert around Africa.

Longer shipping routes increase costs.

Those costs can eventually reach consumers.

Economic Diversification

Djibouti cannot rely indefinitely on port and military revenues.

Tourism, financial services, logistics and digital infrastructure could provide additional sources of income.

Climate Challenges

Djibouti is one of the world's hottest and driest countries.

Water scarcity is a major concern.

Climate adaptation therefore needs to remain part of national planning.

The country's strategic importance is likely to increase as Red Sea tensions continue.
