COSATU calls on students from working-class families to apply for NSFAS funding
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) calls on workers to encourage their dependents to urgently apply for funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for the 2027 academic year, before applications close at 23:59 on Saturday, 31 October. There will be no extensions.
Dependents of parents employed in the public or other sectors may qualify for the missing-middle loan and should therefore not assume that they will be disqualified merely because their parents are employed.
It is important to note the following:
1. Students from families with a combined annual household income of R350 000 or less qualify for a NSFAS Bursary.
2. Students from households with a combined annual income above R350 000 up to R600 000 qualify for a missing-middle loan.
3. Students with disabilities qualify for the NSFAS Bursary up to a household-income threshold of R600 000.
These household income thresholds apply to gross income before deductions, and to income of both parents. The missing-middle loan is a repayable student loan. It is crucial that applying students understand the accompanying terms.
To apply, students should visit: www.nsfas.org.za, select myNSFAS, register or log in, complete their personal and household details, provide the required consent and supporting documents, and submit. They must keep their reference number and monitor their application. Creating a profile or saving a draft is not enough.
Learners writing matric can apply even though they have not received their final results or an offer of space from a tertiary institution. NSFAS supports studies at public universities and TVET colleges, not private institutions.
Boys and young men are encouraged to apply as they accounted for only 29% of applications received by 20 October.
COSATU appeals to workers to ensure their dependents apply before the closing date on, 31 October, and not miss out on this life-changing opportunity.
