JOHANNESBURG — A routine street argument in the heart of Alexandra turned catastrophic in the early hours of Saturday, 30 May 2026, leaving one person dead and six others fighting for their lives in a local medical facility.

The violent flare-up occurred on 6th Avenue, heavily localized between John Brand and Hofmeyer Streets, sending ripples of shock through the densely populated northern Johannesburg township.

From Words to Warfare: What Happened?

According to preliminary police briefings, the incident began as a heated verbal altercation between two individuals on the street. As tensions reached a boiling point, the argument took a deadly turn when one of the men suddenly pulled out an illegal firearm.

Instead of targeting his rival directly, the suspect allegedly lost control and began discharging the weapon indiscriminately into the street. The random hail of bullets ripped through the area, striking both parties involved and multiple innocent bystanders who happened to be nearby.

A total of seven heavily wounded victims were rushed by emergency services and community members to a local clinic. Tragically, one victim was declared dead on arrival due to severe trauma, while medical teams scrambled to stabilize the remaining six survivors.

SAPS Launches Mass Manhunt

Gauteng provincial police have officially launched an intensive criminal investigation to track down the shooter, who managed to flee the scene under the cover of darkness.

Detectives from the South African Police Service (SAPS) have formally opened a
comprehensive docket containing:
  • One count of murder.

  • Six counts of attempted murder.

"The random nature of the gunfire underscores the absolute danger of illegal firearms circulating within our urban centers," local police noted, stressing that community assistance will be the deciding factor in securing an immediate arrest.

Call for Community Action

With the suspect still heavily armed and at large, police are appealing directly to the residents of Alexandra who may have witnessed the initial argument or seen the shooter escaping toward Hofmeyer Street to break their silence.

Anonymous tip-offs can be funneled directly through two secure, state-managed channels:

  • The Crime Stop Line: 08600 10111

  • Digital Reporting: The official MySapsApp, which is completely free to download on all mobile smartphones.
