BY : CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE EDITOR KASiBC_AFRiCA
WEST RAND — The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) West Rand mayoral candidates have officially taken the region’s worsening service delivery crisis to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
The opposition party has lodged formal complaints with the SAHRC over the persistent water crisis in Merafong, the widespread failure to complete Mega Housing Projects across the West Rand, and the urgent need to address homelessness in Mogale City.

A Constitutional Violations Complaint
The high-stakes complaints were personally handed over to the commission by Mogale City Mayoral Candidate Ald Tyrone Gray, Merafong City Mayoral Candidate Cllr Carlos Rebelo, and Rand West City Mayoral Candidate Jacques Julius. The SAHRC has officially received and acknowledged the submission.
The DA candidates emphasized that access to clean water and adequate housing are basic human rights enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa. The party is calling for an immediate, thorough investigation by the commission to address these systemic human rights violations, demanding a prompt response within a seven-day deadline detailing the SAHRC's plan of action.
Mega Housing Failures and Corruption Allegations
According to the DA mayoral candidates, the failure of mega housing projects across the West Rand serves as a classic example of poor ANC governance. They argue that residents have been completely left behind, forced to endure unsafe living conditions, rampant sewage overflows, overcrowded transport networks, and a severe lack of essential public infrastructure such as schools, clinics, and police stations.
The DA highlighted specific multi-million rand projects that have stalled or fallen into disrepair, including:
The Western Mega Housing Project
The party noted that these developments are heavily plagued by poor workmanship and severe structural defects. Crucially, the DA alleges that financial mismanagement, maladministration, and potential corruption are the primary drivers behind the endless delays and incomplete constructions, claiming that "pockets were lined, and residents were forgotten."
A Demand for Accountable Leadership
Beyond infrastructure, the DA highlighted the growing issue of homelessness in Mogale City, calling for a structured approach to address special housing needs. The candidates insisted that the West Rand urgently requires accountable leadership, transparent governance, and proper structural planning to build safe, dignified communities.
The DA has vowed to maintain relentless pressure on both the SAHRC and the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements to step up and fulfill their constitutional mandates to provide water and housing to the struggling communities of the West Rand.
