GAUTENG HEALTH WARNS OFFICIALS AND PUBLIC AGAINST BRIBERY AND QUEUE-JUMPING

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has noted with serious concern complaints from members of the public alleging that some patients may be paying officials to bypass queues when scheduling appointments, accessing patient files and collecting medication from pharmacies at public health facilities.

The Department strongly condemns any form of bribery, corruption or preferential treatment within the public healthcare system. Patients must access services through established processes, and no person should be allowed to use money to gain advantage of accessing services.

The allegations are serious, and the Department will investigate credible complaints involving officials who are alleged to have solicited or accepted bribes from patients. Officials are reminded that accepting money or any other benefit in exchange for performing, expediting or giving preferential treatment in the execution of their duties is a serious offence.

Such conduct may constitute corruption in terms of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, 2004 (Act 12 of 2004). Members of the public who are asked for a bribe, or who have information about officials allegedly involved in such activities, are urged to report these incidents immediately.

Patients are encouraged to report such incidents while they are still at the health facility by approaching the Office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or the Quality Assurance Office. This will enable the facility management to record the complaint and, where possible, initiate an immediate investigation. We encourage members of the public not to remain silent when confronted with corruption.

Reporting these incidents will assist the Department in protecting patients, strengthening accountability and ensuring that public healthcare services are provided fairly and without discrimination.

BAIL HEARING IN REIGER PARK SHOOTING CASE POSTPONED FOR FURTHER HEARING

The bail hearing involving Regan Cheslyn Collins (23), Jamal Meyer (24), and Elvino Crawford (27) in the Boksburg Magistrates' Court has been postponed to 08 September 2026 for further hearing.

The State is opposing bail and has placed evidence before the court concerning the seriousness of the charges, the circumstances surrounding the alleged offences, the safety of the community, and the potential risk posed by the accused should they be released.

The accused face four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, as well as charges relating to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The charges arise from a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Reiger Park, Boksburg, on 07 August 2026, during which Roleen Lessing, Jayden Magerman, Constable Tomatsane, and Constable Sibeko were killed. The two police officers were members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit.

The matter has been postponed for continuation of the bail proceedings.

NPA SECURES LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR MURDERERS

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the effective sentence of life imprisonment handed down by the Ezakheni Regional Court to Bahle Dlamini (33) and Siyabonga Dube (31) following their conviction on charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and two counts of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The convictions stem from an incident that occurred on 15 June 2023 in the Roosboom area near Ladysmith. The complainant, who worked as a bakery delivery van driver, and the deceased, Sbonelo Xulu, were delivering bread to a supermarket when they were confronted by Dlamini and Dube, both armed with firearms.

During the robbery, Xulu was fatally shot. The complainant was then forced to drive the accused and drop them off at another location. Before fleeing, the accused stole cellphones belonging to both the deceased and the complainant, as well as cash.

Police officers arrested the accused later that same day at a local taxi rank. Upon their arrest, they were found in possession of the stolen items, as well as two unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

During the trial, Prosecutor Sinethemba Hlongwane successfully led the evidence of the complainant, a Section 204 witness, and the police officers who recovered the firearms from the accused. Following their conviction, the court sentenced Dlamini and Dube to an effective term of life imprisonment and declared them unfit to possess firearms.

The NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crime are held accountable for their actions.

We trust that this sentence sends a strong message that violent crimes of this nature will not be tolerated and that justice will be pursued relentlessly on behalf of victims and affected communities.

IEC reminds political parties and independent candidates of the 28 August deadline for candidate nominations

The Electoral Commission (IEC) reminds all political parties and independent candidates intending to contest the 2026 Local Government Elections that the deadline for the submission and completion of candidate nominations is Friday, 28 August 2026 at 17h00.

The Commission urges all political parties and candidates who intend to participate in the elections to ensure that their candidate nomination details and all required information are completed and submitted well ahead of the deadline.

This will enable a seamless transition to postnomination processes. The Commission advises that the stipulated date and times are based on the Election timetable which cannot be changed nor be negotiated. After 17h00 on Friday, no changes will be permitted.

This means the Online Candidate Nomination System (OCNS), will not be available for submissions beyond the cutoff time. Similarly, no political party or independent candidate will be allowed to enter the IEC Offices after 17h00 with the intention to submit candidate lists.

The Commission encourages prospective independent candidates and political parties to visit the IEC website at www.elections.org.za or contact the Contact Centre at info@elections.org.za or on 0800 11 8000 for more information.

DA to Grill Minister Gayton McKenzie Over R31m FIFA World Cup Delegation Expenses

PARLIAMENT — Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie is set to face intense scrutiny in Parliament today as the Democratic Alliance (DA) prepares to question him over a controversial R31 million expenditure related to the South African delegation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Minister McKenzie and representatives from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture are scheduled to appear before the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture at 17:30. This marks their second appearance before the committee regarding the matter, following an initial meeting on 4 August that left lawmakers dissatisfied.

During the previous parliamentary session, committee members rejected the department’s presentation, describing it as lackluster, and formally demanded a comprehensive, line-item report detailing the delegation's activities and associated costs. The DA noted that Minister McKenzie departed the previous meeting as the probe into the World Cup spending commenced, preventing committee members from questioning him directly.

Heading into today's proceedings, the DA’s Spokesperson on Sport, Arts and Culture, Leah Potgieter MP, emphasized that the department has had sufficient time to produce the required financial records and justifications.

According to the DA, the delegation in question comprised 151 individuals. The opposition party has outlined a specific list of demands that it expects the department's updated report to address, including:

  • Delegation Composition: The full names, professional qualifications, and relevant experience of all 151 delegation members to justify their inclusion.
  • Roles and Responsibilities: A detailed breakdown of the specific duties assigned to each member during the tournament.
  • Activity Log: An account of the daily activities, meetings, and official engagements conducted by the Minister and individual delegation members.
  • Financial Expenditure: An itemized breakdown of the estimated R31 million total cost, specifying the exact amount attributed to each individual attendee.
  • Sponsorships: Full disclosure of all private or corporate sponsorships received to subsidize the trip.
  • Return on Investment: Measurable outcomes and tangible benefits secured for South Africa’s sport, arts, culture, and tourism sectors as a result of the expenditure.

"It is time for the Minister to stop avoiding accountability and account for each rand spent at the World Cup," the party stated ahead of the evening committee meeting.

The Portfolio Committee session is expected to focus heavily on financial oversight and public transparency regarding international government delegations.
