Western Cape Government offers free vehicle safety check during Transport Month

Mobility Month: Western Cape puts roadworthiness in the spotlight with free vehicle safety check

As part of October Mobility Month, the Western Cape Government is offering free vehicle safety checks for scholar transport and public transport vehicles from 13 to 15 October 2026.

The initiative promotes road safety by encouraging drivers and operators to proactively check their vehicles, identify potential defects and address safety concerns.

The free safety checks will be conducted between 8am and 3pm at Gene Louw Traffic College and participating vehicle testing centres across the province, in partnership with municipalities and vehicle testing centres. Scholar transport and public transport operators are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure their vehicles are in a safer condition for transporting learners and commuters.

The inspections are not full roadworthy tests, but practical safety assessments carried out by qualified vehicle examiners. Following the inspection, operators will receive a printed report identifying any defects or safety concerns that require attention, enabling drivers and operators to address potential issues before they become a risk on the road. The inspections will cover key vehicle safety components, including: tyres; braking system; lights; suspension; CV joints; exhaust system; windscreen wipers and other critical safety elements.

The initiative forms part of the Western Cape Government's ongoing commitment to improve road safety and promote a culture of preventative vehicle maintenance. Western Cape Mobility Department’s Chief Director for Traffic Management, Maxine Bezuidenhout, said " October Mobility Month is an opportunity to highlight the importance of the shared responsibility we all have in keeping our roads safe.

Our free vehicle safety checks give scholar and public transport operators an opportunity to identify potential defects and address safety concerns before they put passengers at risk.

These free inspections are an important preventative measure that contribute to safer and more reliable transport services.

We encourage all operators to make use of this free service and make vehicle safety a priority."

Preventative vehicle maintenance remains one of the most effective ways to reduce breakdowns and prevent avoidable incidents. By identifying defects early, drivers and operators can improve the safety and reliability of the vehicles that thousands of learners and commuters depend on every day.

SAPS RAMPS UP CRIME-FIGHTING EFFORTS: 16,380 SUSPECTS ARRESTED, INCLUDING 169 FOR RAPE; MULTI-MILLION-RAND MANDRAX LABORATORIES DISMANTLED AND 164 ILLEGAL FIREARMS SEIZED DURING OPERATION SHANELA

As the South African Police Service (SAPS) launched its National Safer Festive Season Operations in Mpumalanga on 12 October 2026, these operations will run concurrently with Operation Shanela, intensifying crime-fighting efforts and strengthening police visibility across the country throughout the festive season.

During the past week alone, Operation Shanela resulted in the arrest of 16,380 suspects for various offences, including 2,165 wanted suspects linked to violent crimes who were successfully traced and apprehended across multiple provinces.

In support of efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), as outlined in the Presidential Four-Point Plan, 169 suspects were arrested for rape, 155 for murder and 140 for attempted murder.

Police also recovered and removed 164 illegal firearms from circulation. A further 17,277 rounds of ammunition and 760 dangerous weapons were confiscated during the reporting period.

Intelligence-driven crackdown on drug manufacturing and distribution intensifies

Law enforcement agencies continue to intensify intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling organised criminal networks and disrupting the manufacture and distribution of illicit drugs across the country.

During the reporting period, 3,373 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, while a further 275 were arrested for dealing in drugs.

On 6 October 2026, police dealt a significant blow to drug manufacturing following the discovery of a multi-million-rand mandrax laboratory in Hartbeespoort, North West. A 39-year-old Zimbabwean national and three women were arrested.

On 8 October 2026, law enforcement agencies uncovered another multi-million-rand drug laboratory on a farm in Krugersdorp, Gauteng. Five South African nationals were arrested, and mandrax and ecstasy tablets were seized.

In a separate intelligence-driven operation in Hout Bay, Western Cape, three suspects were arrested after police discovered 172,000 mandrax tablets, valued at approximately R10 million, concealed in a false compartment of a vehicle.

Meanwhile, SAPS, working closely with the Department of Home Affairs, arrested 1,647 undocumented foreign nationals. A further 30 people were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng for offences including public violence, unlawful gatherings, obstruction and resisting arrest.

Police will maintain heightened visibility in identified hotspot areas to prevent crime, enforce the law and maintain public order.

These arrests and recoveries demonstrate the SAPS's continued commitment to disrupting criminal networks, tracing wanted suspects and removing illegal firearms and drugs from circulation through intelligence-led policing and coordinated law enforcement operations nationwide.
