Government Communications on impacts of severe weather in John Taolo Gaetsewe District

The District Joint Operating Coordinating Committee (JOC) convened on Friday, 01 May 2026, to deliberate on the incidences caused by inclement weather conditions which affected parts of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from various government departments and municipalities to assess the current impact of flooding on communities, infrastructure, and essential services across the district.

Reports presented during the session confirmed that several areas remain severely affected, with other residential properties surrounded by water, destruction of road infrastructure, and disruptions to basic services. The Committee noted with concern the extent of the impact, particularly within the Joe Morolong Local Municipality, which continues to bear the brunt of the adverse weather conditions.

The JOC further reviewed coordinated response measures currently underway, including disaster assessments, humanitarian assistance, road closures, and the establishment of alternative routes where necessary. Efforts to provide relief to affected households are hampered by lack of access to the affected communities.

The Committee reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensure a coordinated, efficient, and responsive approach to the current crisis. Stakeholders will continue to work collaboratively to ensure that affected communities receive the necessary support and that risks are mitigated.

Assessment reports from various sectors will be consolidated and submitted to the Provincial Government to guide further interventions and resource allocation. All the three local municipalities in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, will host special council meetings between 01 – 04 May 2026, to deliberate on the ongoing challenges and to possibly pass resolutions on declaring local state of disasters.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, adhere to safety advisories, and cooperate with authorities during this period. Communities are also encouraged to report emergencies to relevant authorities.

Government will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.

Durban City Crowned Kings – IFP Hails Nedbank Cup Triumph

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) congratulates Durban City on a commanding victory over TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup Final at Peter Mokaba Stadium in PolokwaneLimpopo.

This was a statement win—driven by discipline, sharp execution, and unity of purpose. Durban City’s players, coaches, and management have set a high standard, delivering a performance worthy of champions.

KwaZulu-Natal beams with pride. This triumph sends a clear message to young footballers across South Africa: excellence is earned through hard work, resilience, and belief.

We also commend TS Galaxy for a strong campaign and a competitive final. Fixtures of this calibre continue to unite communities and elevate local talent.

Beyond the excitement on the pitch, the Nedbank Cup Final delivered meaningful economic benefits, particularly for the hospitality and tourism sectors in Polokwane. The influx of supporters and visitors provided a welcome boost to local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and related services, underscoring the broader value of major sporting events.

The IFP celebrates this moment as a victory not only for Durban City, but for South African football as a whole—proof that sport remains a powerful driver of unity, pride, and opportunity in our nation.

IFP READY TO FIGHT AND WIN AS LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION 2026

BY : CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE EDITOR KASiBC_AFRiCA

IFP READY TO FIGHT AND WIN AS LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION DATE IS SET

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) welcomes the official proclamation of the 2026 Local Government Elections with South Africans set to go to the polls on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.

The long-awaited announcement provides much-needed certainty for political parties and independent candidates alike, allowing for the finalisation of critical processes such as candidate selection, manifesto development, and compliance with Electoral Commission deadlines.

These elections are not merely procedural—they are decisive. They present a critical opportunity for the IFP to consolidate and expand its growing footprint across municipalities, while strengthening its position as a credible, people-centred alternative in local governance.

We call on all eligible citizens to take responsibility for the future of their communities by ensuring they are registered to vote. Voter registration will take place over the weekend of 20–21 June 2026, and we urge voters not to delay, but to also make use of IEC offices and online platforms to register.

The IFP has already begun mobilising communities across the country and is intensifying its campaign to present South Africans with a clear, compelling choice—one rooted in our proven track record of clean governance, responsive leadership, and effective service delivery. Our values of Ubuntu/Botho remain central to our approach, fostering mutual respect and accountability between leaders and the communities they serve.

As the election season gathers momentum, it is clear that these elections will be fiercely contested across municipalities and metros. The IFP stands ready.

Recent by-election results have reaffirmed growing public confidence in the IFP, with 47 ward victories secured since the 2021 Local Government Elections. This is a clear signal that South Africans are turning to the IFP as a trusted vehicle for change.

We firmly believe that only the IFP has the leadership, experience, and integrity to restore functionality to struggling municipalities, revive service delivery, and rebuild public trust in local government.

Finally, we call on all political parties to uphold the principles of political tolerance, respect, and peaceful engagement throughout the election period.

ELECTORAL INTEGRITY FOLLOWING 2026 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS ANNOUNCEMENT

ELECTORAL INTEGRITY FOLLOWING 2026 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS ANNOUNCEMENT

MK PARTY RAISES SERIOUS CONCERNS OVER ELECTORAL INTEGRITY FOLLOWING 2026 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS ANNOUNCEMENT

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (“MK Party”) notes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s nonchalant announcement setting 4 November 2026 as the date for the Local Government Elections

This declaration comes against the backdrop of the deeply contested 2024 national elections, the results of which the MK Party is currently challenging in the Electoral Court, with a hearing scheduled for 18 June 2026. Central to this challenge is the conduct of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), which interfered with a live Election Results System under the guise of “optimising updates,” resulting in a suspicious 2.5-hour system downtime.

This episode raises serious concerns about the integrity of the IEC, an institution constitutionally mandated to uphold accountability, transparency and fairness. Reports of dumped ballot papers further erode public confidence in the electoral process.

Equally troubling are admissions by both the IEC and the President that the premature announcement of results was driven by a need to appease “markets,” rather than to address legitimate objections raised by the MK Party and other stakeholders.

Such actions undermine democratic principles and contribute directly to growing voter apathy and declining electoral participation. In light of these developments, the MK Party demands full accountability from the IEC.

South Africans deserve clear answers on why a live system was tampered with, who authorised this socalled “optimisation,” and what safeguards will be implemented to prevent a recurrence. Without transparency and accountability, the credibility of the upcoming Local Government Elections remains in serious doubt.

Home Affairs Suspends Two Officials over AI ( Artificial Intelligence )

Home Affairs Suspends Two Officials over AI  ( Artificial Intelligence )

BY : CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE EDITOR KASiBC_AFRiCA

Home Affairs suspends two officials over AI use linked to revised White Paper on Citizenship and Immigration

Home Affairs suspends two officials over use of AI “hallucinations”

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is suspending two senior officials with immediate effect following the detection of apparent Artificial Intelligence (AI) “hallucinations” cited as references appended to the recently Cabinet-approved Revised White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection.

The precautionary suspension of a Chief Director in the relevant unit was carried out this afternoon, while the suspension of a Director involved in the drafting process will be effected on Monday. In addition to implementing precautionary suspensions, the Department has appointed two independent law firms to respectively manage the disciplinary process and review all policy documents produced by the Department dating back to 30 November 2022, when the first Large Language Model (LLM) was released to the general public. Moving forward, the Department will also design and implement AI checks and declarations as part of its internal approval processes.

Based on the Department’s initial internal review, the problem appears to be related to the list of references appended to the Revised White Paper. It seems that these references were generated and attached to the document after the fact, as they are not cited in the body of the text. Consequently, the Department has withdrawn the reference list, pending the finalisation of the independent probe to determine how the hallucinations came to be added to the list.

However, the body of the Revised White Paper continues to accurately reflect the government’s position on the policy reforms required in these domains. These measures came about through an extensive process of cross-departmental collaboration and public consultation, and are not materially affected by the apparent AI hallucinations contained in the standalone reference list.

The Department nonetheless sincerely apologises for this unacceptable oversight. The immediate implementation of precautionary suspensions and independent review processes, as well as internal reforms, reflects our commitment to taking any and all steps required to rectify the situation, and avoid any repeats in future.

At the same time, the Department recognises the benefits of AI and that it is being widely adopted across society. It is a transformative but disruptive technology that is changing how organisations operate across the private and public sectors.

We must now adapt to keep up.

While regretting the embarrassment caused, the Department of Home Affairs is not only taking immediate corrective action but also regards this painful experience as an opportunity to further modernise our internal processes in order to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.
