President Cyril Ramaphosa Appoints New SARS Commissioner

BY : CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE EDITOR KASiBC_AFRiCA©®™

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Dr Ngobani Johnstone Makhubu as Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) for a period of five years with effect from 1 May 2026.

President Ramaphosa has made this appointment in terms of section 6 of the South African Revenue Service Act of 1997, following an unanimous recommendation by a selection panel convened by Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana.

Dr Makhubu, who has held the position of Deputy Commissioner: Taxpayer Engagement & Operations since 2023, succeeds Commissioner Edward Kieswetter whose two-year contract ends on 30 April 2026.

The incoming Commissioner is a seasoned public and private sector executive with more than 17 years of senior leadership experience spanning tax administration, commercial, finance and operations management.

He has worked in complex, regulated and large-scale organisations across multiple industries including fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), mining, power generation and public revenue services.

Dr Makhubu has worked on the formulation of the SARS strategic direction since 2020 and has actively worked to implement the Vision 2024 strategy together with the current Commissioner.

The implementation of Vision 2024 achieved revenue collections with a compounded annual growth rate of 7.6% while voluntary compliance increased by 3.4 percentage points.

President Ramaphosa congratulates Dr Makhubu on his appointment to lead the revenue service as the institution that provides the financial resources necessary for the Government to function, fund infrastructure, and pay for social services.

President Ramaphosa has also expressed his appreciation and high regard for Commissioner Kieswetter’s incisive and innovative leadership that has positioned SARS as a critical enabler of fiscal stability, social delivery, trade facilitation, and the enablement of domestic and foreign investment.

President Ramaphosa says the change in the leadership of SARS shows how sound succession planning contributes to the capability of the State.

The passing of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Albert Mazibuko

BY : CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE EDITOR AFRICA

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Albert Mazibuko, a legendary member of the world-renowned group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

His passing on Sunday, at the age of 77, is a loss not only for South Africa’s music industry, but for the nation as a whole.

Albert Mazibuko was more than a performer; he was the custodian of a uniquely South African sound that travelled across the world and united people through music. Through Ladysmith Black Mambazo, he helped carry the story, resilience and soul of our nation onto the global stage.

Founded in 1960 in KwaZulu-Natal by the late Joseph Shabalala, Ladysmith Black Mambazo became one of South Africa’s most celebrated musical groups and global ambassadors of the traditional isicathamiya style. The group rose to international prominence following their collaboration with Paul Simon on the landmark album Graceland, which introduced millions around the world to South African choral music during a pivotal moment in our history.

Over the decades, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has become synonymous with musical excellence, earning multiple Grammy Awards and performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages.

Their music has served as a bridge between cultures while proudly preserving the Zulu vocal traditions that form part of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.

South Africa has lost one of its cultural giants. Albert Mazibuko and his fellow members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo showed the world the beauty of our traditions and the power of harmony. His voice and presence will be deeply missed, but the legacy he leaves behind will continue to inspire generations of artists.

On behalf of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the people of South Africa, I extend my sincere condolences to the Mazibuko family, the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the music community, and all South Africans mourning the loss of a beloved cultural icon.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his music continue to remind us who we are as a people.

Gayton McKenzie
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture

INTERCEPTION OF BUS CARRYING UNDOCUMENTED FOREIGN NATIONALS IN SOUTH AFRICA

INTERCEPTION OF BUS CARRYING UNDOCUMENTED FOREIGN NATIONALS IN SOUTH  AFRICA

BY : CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE EDITOR AFRICA

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, Mr Mosa Chabane, has welcomed the interception of a cross-border bus by the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport on Friday, 3 April 2026.

The bus, which was travelling from Zimbabwe to Cape Town, was found to be carrying 32 undocumented foreign nationals in addition to 43 passengers who had been duly processed at the Beitbridge Port of Entry in accordance with all prescripts and procedures. It is alleged that the 32 undocumented passengers were picked up after the bus had crossed into South Africa, specifically in Makhado and Johannesburg.

Mr Chabane said the interception highlights the need for stricter enforcement and accountability within the cross-border transport sector.

“We commend the provincial department for its vigilance and decisive action. This interception exposes serious violations that undermine the integrity of our immigration system and border controls,” said Mr Chabane.

He called on the Border Management Authority (BMA) to set an example by suspending the bus operator, Rimbi Travel and Tours, pending investigation on how the 32 undocumented passengers got to be in the bus.

Mr Chabane reiterated the importance of effecting consequence management to send a strong message to operators who deliberately flout the law, saying that failure to act decisively will only embolden non-compliance and weaken the country’s border management systems.

Furthermore, he called on a coordinated and integrated approach among law enforcement agencies, including Immigration Officers, the South African Police Service and metro police departments, to address the presence of undocumented foreign nationals within the country.

“An integrated law enforcement approach is critical to ensure that undocumented individuals within our borders are identified and processed in line with the law. This requires ongoing collaboration and information-sharing between all relevant authorities,” he said.

Mr Chabane has indicated that the committee will, in the next parliamentary term, propose a joint meeting with its sister committee responsible for policing matters to explore sustainable and coordinated interventions.

ANC VETERANS LEAGUE EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT THE GAUTENG PROVINCE CABINET.

KASIBC_AFRICA BREAKING NEWS

ANC VETERANS LEAGUE EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT THE GAUTENG PROVINCE CABINET.

BY : CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE EDITOR

The ANC Veterans League was dismayed to learn this week about the appointment of the EFF Provincial Leader, Mr Nkululeko Dunga to the position of MEC for Finance in Gauteng together with the reshuffling of the Gauteng Executive Council by the Premier, Cde Panyaza Lesufi

The Premier of Gauteng is entrusting a R179 billion into the hands of Dunga, who was relieved of his position in Ekurhuleni after allegations of poor financial performance and non-compliance.

These moves bring no comfort to the residents of Gauteng who expect their leadership to prioritise service delivery and stability. The ANC Veterans’ League believes that coalition arrangements should be guided by the strategic framework for municipal coalitions approved by the ANC NEC in April 2023.

This document states that “we must ensure that any coalition we are part of must be based on certain principles that must put the interests of the people first – a stable government with a minimum programme that can improve service delivery and push forward the transformation agenda”. After holding a Special ANC VL NWC meeting, the Veterans’ League will be pursuing this matter in the ANC since we are determined to ensure that those who hold senior positions in government are ethical, incorruptible and there to serve the people.
