CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC SEEKS GREATER STABILITY AS SECURITY AND DEVELOPMENT REMAIN NATIONAL PRIORITIES

Central African Republic — The Central African Republic continues to face the difficult task of transforming political stability into lasting peace and economic development after years of armed conflict and political instability.

The country remains one of Africa's most fragile states, but there are signs of a broader effort to strengthen government institutions, improve security and expand economic activity.

For ordinary citizens, however, the central question remains straightforward: can greater political stability produce better jobs, functioning public services and safer communities?

A Country Recovering from Conflict

The Central African Republic has experienced years of conflict involving armed groups competing for territory and political influence.

Large areas of the country have historically remained outside effective government control.

This has made development extremely difficult.

Roads, schools, hospitals and administrative institutions have suffered from insecurity.

Communities in rural areas have often been particularly vulnerable.

The government's long-term objective is therefore not simply to defeat armed groups but to extend effective state administration throughout the country.

The Importance of Security

Security remains the foundation of economic development.

Farmers need safe access to fields and markets.

Traders need Secure Roads.

Teachers and healthcare workers need to be able to reach communities.

Businesses need confidence that investments and employees will be protected.

Without those conditions, even well-designed development programmes can struggle.

Natural Resources

The Central African Republic possesses significant natural resources, including gold and diamonds.

Yet resource wealth has not automatically translated into widespread prosperity.

Illegal mining and smuggling have historically deprived the state of potential revenue.

Greater government control over mining could provide additional resources for national development.

The challenge is ensuring that mining communities themselves benefit from economic activity.

Agriculture

Agriculture remains essential to the country's economy.

Most rural households depend directly or indirectly on farming.

Investment in roads, irrigation, storage facilities and agricultural processing could help farmers increase production and income.

Instead of exporting raw agricultural commodities, the country could gradually develop local processing industries.

That would create additional employment.

Regional Relationships

The Central African Republic is closely connected to its neighbours.

Cameroon is particularly important because much of the country's international trade depends on transport routes through Cameroonian territory.

The stability of neighbouring Chad, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan therefore matters to Bangui.

Regional instability can create refugee movements, arms trafficking and disruption to trade.

Young People

The country's young population presents both a challenge and an opportunity.

Young Central Africans need education, vocational training and employment.

Digital technology could provide new opportunities, particularly if internet access expands beyond the capital.

Mobile banking, online commerce and digital education could eventually connect remote communities to national and international markets.

The humanitarian challenge

Humanitarian organisations continue to play an important role in providing healthcare, food and protection.

But long-term development cannot depend permanently on humanitarian assistance.

The government needs stronger domestic institutions capable of delivering services.

The Central African Republic's future will depend on whether improvements in security can be converted into development.

Peace must become more than the absence of fighting.

It must mean functioning schools, reliable healthcare, roads, jobs and economic opportunity.

CAMEROON ENTERS A CRITICAL PERIOD AS SECURITY, POLITICS AND REGIONAL TRADE SHAPE THE FUTURE

CameroonCameroon remains one of Central Africa's most strategically important countries as the government confronts security challenges while attempting to strengthen economic development.

The country occupies a unique position.

It has access to the Atlantic Ocean, borders Nigeria and several Central African countries, and serves as an important commercial and transport corridor.

But Cameroon also faces long-running security challenges, particularly in the country's Far North and English-speaking regions.

Security Challenges

The Far North has experienced attacks linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State-affiliated groups.

The Northwest and Southwest regions have also suffered years of separatist conflict.

These crises have displaced communities and affected economic activity.

The government has continued security operations while attempting to maintain national unity.

Economic Importance

Cameroon has one of Central Africa's more diversified economies.

Agriculture, oil, gas, mining, forestry, telecommunications and services all contribute to national economic activity.

The country is also a major regional market.

Its port infrastructure is important for landlocked neighbouring countries.

Energy and Natural Resources

Cameroon possesses oil and gas resources but has also been developing hydropower.

Electricity generation remains critical to industrialisation.

Improved power supplies can support factories, businesses, schools and households.

Regional trade

Cameroon plays an important role in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community.

Its roads and ports provide connections to Chad and the Central African Republic.

Regional stability therefore has direct economic implications.

Media and Civil Society

Press freedom and treatment of journalists remain important subjects in Cameroon.

Earlier in 2026, a freelance journalist working for the Associated Press was reportedly assaulted and briefly detained by police while covering deported African migrants in Yaoundé.

Such incidents draw attention to the difficult operating environment for journalists.

Independent reporting is particularly important during periods of political or security tension.

Natural Gas Cooperation

Cameroon has also strengthened energy cooperation with neighbouring Equatorial Guinea.

The two countries signed an agreement earlier in 2026 concerning joint exploitation of the Yoyo-Yolanda natural-gas field

Such cooperation demonstrates the importance of cross-border energy development in Central Africa.

Cameroon's young population presents both an opportunity and a challenge.

Young people require jobs, education and digital access.

Technology and telecommunications could help create new employment opportunities.

But digital development must be accompanied by reliable electricity and affordable connectivity.

Cameroon will need to manage several priorities simultaneously: national security, economic development, political stability, regional trade and youth employment.

Its geographic position gives it considerable strategic importance.

CABO VERDE MOURNS AFTER DEADLY FOGO BUS CRASH AS SAFETY QUESTIONS EMERGE

Cabo Verde — Cabo Verde is mourning the deaths of at least 25 people following a devastating passenger-bus crash on the island of Fogo.

Most of those killed were teenagers.

The crash occurred on the Campanas de Cima route in a mountainous part of Fogo Island. Several people were injured, while local authorities reported that the condition of some victims made the recovery and burial process particularly difficult. President José Maria Pereira Neves described the incident as a major catastrophe.

A National Tragedy

The accident has shocked the Island Nation.

Cabo Verde is made up of volcanic islands scattered across the Atlantic Ocean, and mountainous terrain can make road transport particularly challenging.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

That investigation will be important because families and communities will want to understand what happened and whether similar accidents can be prevented.

Transport safety

The tragedy has placed renewed attention on road safety.

Passenger transport is essential in island communities.

People depend on buses to reach schools, workplaces, markets and healthcare facilities.

When a major accident occurs, the effects extend far beyond the immediate victims.

Entire communities can be affected.

Young Victims

The fact that many of those killed were teenagers has made the tragedy particularly painful.

Young people represent Cabo Verde's future.

Their deaths have affected families, schools and local communities.

Tourism and Infrastructure

Cabo Verde has developed an international reputation as a tourism destination.

Tourism is a major contributor to the economy.

But tourism development depends on safe and reliable transport infrastructure.

Visitors need to move safely between airports, hotels, towns and attractions.

Investment in roads and transport safety therefore has economic as well as humanitarian importance.

Island Development

Each Cabo Verdean island has different economic characteristics.

Tourism dominates parts of the country, while fishing, services and remittances also contribute to the economy.

Improving infrastructure across the islands is essential to ensuring that economic development is not concentrated in a small number of locations.

Presidential response

The president's decision to describe the crash as a catastrophe reflects the national significance of the event.

Government authorities are expected to support affected families and determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The immediate priority is the victims and their families.

The longer-term question is whether lessons from the disaster can improve road safety.

A comprehensive investigation should examine road conditions, vehicle safety, driver conduct, emergency response and passenger protection.

BURUNDI'S REGIONAL POSITION UNDER PRESSURE AS EAST AFRICAN MIGRATION AND SECURITY CONCERNS GROW

BURUNDI'S REGIONAL POSITION UNDER PRESSURE AS EAST AFRICAN MIGRATION AND SECURITY CONCERNS GROW

BURUNDI — Burundi is facing renewed regional pressure as developments in neighbouring countries increasingly affect its citizens, refugees and cross-border communities.

One of the most immediate concerns has emerged in Kenya, where authorities recently announced a temporary amnesty for undocumented East African nationals amid fears of a crackdown on foreign-operated small businesses.

The announcement prompted hundreds of Burundians in Nairobi to seek assistance from their embassy.

The development demonstrates how closely connected East African economies have become.

Burundians Abroad

Many Burundians work, trade or seek opportunities outside the country.

Kenya has become an important destination for East African migrants and traders.

The recent uncertainty has raised concerns among Burundian nationals about employment, documentation and their ability to remain in Kenya.

Kenyan authorities have said the policy is not intended to encourage xenophobia and have urged undocumented East Africans to register with their embassies.

The DRC Connection

Burundi's relationship with the Democratic Republic of Congo is equally important.

The two countries share a border and have deep commercial and social connections.

Conflict in eastern DRC has repeatedly affected Burundi through refugee movements and border security concerns.

The reopening of the Kavimvira border crossing earlier in 2026 was therefore an important development for cross-border trade and movement.

Refugee Pressure

Burundi has also hosted large numbers of refugees from Congo.

Humanitarian agencies face the challenge of providing food, shelter, healthcare and protection.

Refugee flows place additional pressure on a country that itself has limited resources.

Economic Development

Burundi remains one of Africa's lower-income economies.

Agriculture is central to the livelihoods of its population.

Coffee and tea are important export products.

Economic diversification remains essential.

The country needs better infrastructure, electricity, digital access and opportunities for young people.

East African regional integration provides opportunities.

Trade between Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC could increase economic opportunities.

But political and security tensions can quickly disrupt those links.

Burundi's future will depend partly on regional stability.

A more peaceful eastern DRC would reduce refugee and security pressures.

Greater economic integration could create new markets.

And improved relations with neighbouring countries could help Burundi strengthen trade.

BURKINA FASO'S SECURITY STRUGGLE REMAINS CENTRAL TO THE COUNTRY'S FUTURE

BURKINA FASO - Burkina Faso remains one of the countries at the centre of West Africa's security crisis, as the government continues its effort to confront armed extremist groups and reshape the country's political and international relationships.

The government led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré has pursued a strongly sovereignty-focused political agenda.

That agenda has included changes in foreign relations, restrictions on some civil-society organisations and a more confrontational approach toward international media.

In May, authorities banned TV5Monde broadcasts, accusing the broadcaster of spreading disinformation and glorifying terrorism. Earlier in the year, the government announced the dissolution of numerous associations and civil-society groups.

Security First

The country's central challenge remains armed violence.

Burkina Faso is part of the Sahel region where jihadist organisations have expanded their operations over recent years.

Communities in rural areas have suffered deaths, displacement and disruption to agriculture and commerce.

The security crisis has also placed enormous pressure on government resources.

The authorities must provide military operations while maintaining public services for millions of citizens.

A changing foreign policy

Burkina Faso has increasingly sought alternatives to traditional Western partnerships.

The country has strengthened relations with other governments and has emphasised national sovereignty.

This reflects a broader political trend across parts of the Sahel.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have moved away from traditional regional arrangements and established closer political and security cooperation with one another.

Civil Society and Media

The government's approach has generated debate.

Supporters say restrictions are necessary during a national security emergency.

Critics argue that limiting independent media and civil society can reduce transparency and weaken public accountability.

The balance between security and civil liberties will remain an important issue.

The Economic Challenge

Security instability affects every part of the economy.

Farmers cannot operate normally in areas affected by violence.

Transport routes become more dangerous.

Schools and clinics may close.

Businesses face higher operating costs.

The government therefore needs security improvements to support economic development.

Gold and natural resources

Burkina Faso possesses significant gold resources.

Gold mining contributes heavily to export earnings.

The government has sought greater control over natural resources and mining revenues.

The strategic question is whether mineral wealth can help fund national development.

The Youth Factor

Burkina Faso has a young population.

Young people are central to the country's future but are also particularly affected by unemployment and insecurity.

Creating jobs through agriculture, manufacturing, technology and small businesses will be essential.

Burkina Faso's future will be shaped by the security situation.

If violence decreases, economic reconstruction could accelerate.

If insecurity continues, government resources will remain concentrated on military operations.
