​The finalized tracking data thoroughly debunks the narrative of youth apathy in South African politics. Young people aged 16 to 29 dominated the enrollment metrics, breathing significant new life into the country's democratic database.

The Youth Wave: The 16–29 age cohort accounted for 785,078 total transactions (27% of overall weekend activity). More crucially, youth comprised an overwhelming 80% of all brand-new, first-time registrations (379,767 out of 477,174).

​The Gender Balance: The historical trend of high female electoral participation endured. Women drove 57% of total weekend activity (1.6 million transactions) and accounted for 53% of all first-time applicants.

​Channel Efficiency: Boots on the Ground vs. Digital Portals

​While the IEC’s online portal saw substantial engagement, physical voting stations remained the overwhelmingly preferred destination for citizens, largely driven by the deployment of Voter Management Devices (VMDs).

​In-Person Voting Stations: 88% of voters (over 2.5 million people) opted to visit their local stations in person, where VMDs drastically accelerated processing times.

​Online Registration Portal: 12% of transactions (362,296) were completed digitally. Notably, young people aged 16–29 made up 48% of all online self-registrations.

​Digital Footprint: The IEC website clocked an incredible 12 million visits over the two days, primarily driven by citizens using the Online Voter Registration, Am I Registered? status checker, and the Voting Station Finder tools.

Major Announcements: Zero-Rated Data and Second Registration Weekend

​To completely eliminate barriers to democratic entry ahead of the November 4, 2026 Local Government Elections, the Commission has launched three major interventions:

​1. Data-Free Access: The Online Voter Registration Portal has officially been zero-rated. Eligible citizens can now register, update residential addresses, and verify their status without incurring any mobile data charges.

​2. Second Registration Weekend: A second nationwide physical registration weekend has been scheduled for 1 and 2 August 2026, opening all 23,706 voting stations to the public once more.

​3. Candidate System Live: The Online Candidate Nomination System (OCNS) is now live for political parties and independent candidates to capture lists and supporter details. Official training sessions are set to commence shortly.

​The IEC noted that roughly 30,000 online applications remain temporarily pending due to poor identity document (ID) photo uploads. 

Dedicated internal verification teams are currently processing these, and affected citizens will be contacted directly if a re-upload is required.

​The online registration portal (registertovote.elections.org.za) will remain open 24/7 until the elections are officially proclaimed by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

PRETORIA — A major blow has been dealt to transnational organized crime networks after a multidisciplinary task force intercepted and seized suspected stolen copper worth an estimated R12.68 million at City Deep in Johannesburg.

CAPE TOWN — The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has formally rejected the decision by National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza not to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s court application, which seeks to halt ongoing parliamentary impeachment proceedings against him.

The opposition party expressed deep concern over the development, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent that risks permanently weakening Parliament’s constitutional mandate to oversee and hold the executive branch accountable.
