NIGER ACCUSES FRANCE OF SUPPORTING MILITARY MUTINY AS GOVERNMENT PUSHES SOVEREIGNTY AGENDA
NIAMEY, Niger — Niger has accused France of attempting to destabilise the country following a military mutiny.
The allegation marks another sharp deterioration in relations between Niger and its former colonial power.
According to Reuters, Niger's government accused France of instigating a mutiny by soldiers who attacked a strategically important military airbase the previous week. The government did not provide detailed evidence supporting the accusation.
A New Political Era
Niger has been governed by a military administration since the 2023 coup.
The government has repeatedly emphasised national sovereignty.
Relations with France have deteriorated dramatically.
French troops were withdrawn from Niger after the coup.
The government subsequently strengthened relations with other international partners.
Sahel Alliance
Niger is part of the Alliance of Sahel States alongside Mali and Burkina Faso.
The three governments have sought greater political and military cooperation.

The official Nigerien news agency recently reported the graduation of a new class from the country's officer-training institution and the presentation of more than 1,300 new national guards.
The government has also been carrying out security inspections in areas including Agadez.

Nigerien authorities reported that Médecins Sans Frontières Switzerland was supporting health facilities in Niamey amid a seasonal malaria increase.
Authorities have also expanded cataract-screening and surgical programmes.
Agriculture
Agriculture remains central to Niger's economy.
Millet is one of the country's major crops.
Recent agricultural reporting from the official news agency indicates that the 2026 harvest has begun in parts of the country.
Food security remains a major concern because rainfall is unpredictable.
Energy and Industry
Niger has uranium, oil and other natural resources.
The government increasingly emphasises national control over those resources.
The challenge is developing infrastructure capable of processing resources domestically.
Traditional Medicine
Niger has also moved to strengthen regulation of traditional medicine.
