RISE MZANSI DEMANDS URGENT ACTION AND TRANSPARENCY FROM PIKITUP TO AVERT MASSIVE JOHANNESBURG WASTE STRIKE

KASIBC_AUDIO

JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG – Political party RISE Mzansi has called on the management of Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg's waste management entity, to immediately make public a pending legal opinion regarding the status and permanent absorption of casual workers.

The demand comes amid growing fears of a full-scale, catastrophic collapse of waste management services across the metro, as permanent employees consider downing tools in solidarity with their casual colleagues.

The Looming Legal Deadline and Scheduled Negotiations

Following critical discussions between Pikitup management and representatives of the casual workers, it was revealed that the utility's leadership is currently awaiting a key legal opinion, which is expected to be delivered on Friday, 17 July 2026.

In an effort to keep negotiations constructive, workers have requested that formal talks resume on Monday, 20 July 2026, at 14:00. This brief window is intended to allow all negotiating parties sufficient time to thoroughly review the legal document before returning to the table. RISE Mzansi has confirmed it will be present at Monday's meeting to monitor progress and advocate for a fair outcome.

Systemic Reliance on Precarious Labour

The current dispute highlights a long-standing grievance regarding how the city manages its cleaning services. For years, the workers responsible for keeping Johannesburg's streets clean have been subjected to precarious, casualized labour under third-party external contractors.

The casual workers—many of whom have worked at Pikitup depots since the COVID-19 pandemic or as far back as 2019—have repeatedly protested against delayed recruitment and what they describe as broken promises of permanent employment. Recent protests at various depots, including the Waterval and Randburg depots, have already caused noticeable backlogs in refuse collection.
Safety Breaches Fueling Permanent Staff Solidarity

The threat of a wider shutdown has escalated significantly as permanent Pikitup staff prepare to join the strike. Beyond showing solidarity with their contract colleagues, permanent workers are protesting severe operational and safety standard violations on the ground:

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP): Dictates that no waste removal truck should leave a depot with fewer than six workers.
The Current Reality: Due to staff shortages and ongoing disputes, trucks across most of the city's depots are being sent out with only two or three workers.

This severe understaffing has left the remaining workforce heavily overworked, compromising both their physical safety and the efficiency of refuse collection across Johannesburg's neighbourhoods.

A Crisis the City Cannot Afford

Johannesburg's residents and businesses are already bearing the brunt of recurring waste collection backlogs. A joint strike by both casual and permanent employees would halt services entirely, creating a severe public health hazard.
RISE Mzansi emphasizes that the city's residents, who pay for basic services, have a right to full transparency regarding what is stalling a resolution.

The party is urging Pikitup's political and administrative leadership to prioritize the workers' safety and employment security before the city descends into a total waste management crisis.

TINUBU MEETS DELOITTE AFRICA DELEGATION, DEFENDS TOUGH ECONOMIC REFORMS AS ‘BITTER MEDICINE’ WORKING FOR NIGERIA

KASIBC_AUDIO

ABUJA, NIGERIAPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday defended his administration’s sweeping financial and fiscal policy changes as "bitter medicine" that is laying a solid foundation for the country's economic future.

The President made these remarks at the State House in Abuja while receiving a high-level delegation from Deloitte Africa, led by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ruwayda Redfearn. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji.

Foundational Reforms vs. Short-Term Applause

Addressing the Deloitte delegation, President Tinubu acknowledged the public friction caused by his administration's bold economic reforms—including the removal of the petrol subsidy, the unification of the foreign exchange market, and the sweeping modernization of the national tax system.

"Yes, reforms are difficult. It has not been a McDonald’s customer relationship but a harvester of good things, if implemented well, and that is what we are about. Yes, some issues are difficult to take—the bitter medicine—but it is working well. For the economy, Nigeria is making serious foundational progress." — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The President pointed out that three years of consistent reform implementation have steadily stabilized the macroeconomic landscape, yielding positive growth indicators and gradually rebuilding global investor confidence.

A Call to Invest in Nigeria’s Dynamic Youth

Recalling his own early career days in Chicago where he "cut his childhood accounting teeth," President Tinubu praised Deloitte's legendary training culture. He urged the multinational professional services network to actively support Nigeria's economic growth by expanding its youth training, capacity-building, and recruitment pipelines locally.

Echoing the President’s call, Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele urged the Deloitte leadership to focus heavily on structural capacity-building for Nigeria's vibrant youth population.

Deloitte Pledges Support for Economic Transformation

Deloitte Africa CEO Ruwayda Redfearn highlighted the firm's immense global reach—boasting over 500,000 employees worldwide, including 6,000 across Africa—and confirmed that the firm's global revenue reached $74 billion in 2025.

Redfearn expressed Deloitte's readiness to leverage its vast digital and business transformation capabilities to support Nigeria's ongoing fiscal reforms.

Adding to this commitment, the CEO of Deloitte West Africa, Yomi Olugbenro, assured the President that the firm is fully aligned with his administration's long-term vision.

"Where we are at the moment, we believe that the ground has been solidly laid," Olugbenro said. "The bigger work is really about how to cascade some of those big reforms further down... to truly extract more value and deliver the dividends of democracy to ordinary Nigerians on the street".

PUBLIC WORKS MINISTER DEAN MACPHERSON VISITS SITE OF SHEMBE WALL COLLAPSE

KASIBC_AUDIO

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, alongside eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, conducted an urgent site visit on Tuesday to the Nazareth Baptist (Shembe) Church in eBuhleni Village, Inanda.

The visit follows the structural collapse of an approximately 18-meter-long concrete retaining wall on Monday afternoon. The structure collapsed while workers and congregants were resting near the site.

Rescue Operation and Casualty Update

An intensive, multi-agency search and rescue operation—involving the eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services, SAPS, K9 units, and Metro Search and Rescue—was deployed immediately following the incident.

  • 12 Injuries Reported: A total of twelve congregants were injured and transported to local medical facilities for treatment.

  • Current Status: Four patients remain hospitalized, while the others have since been treated and discharged. One patient is expected to undergo surgery.

  • No Fatalities: Emergency teams officially called off the search after digging through the rubble to confirm that no additional persons remained trapped beneath the sand.

Two-Pronged Structural Investigation Launched

Following constructive consultations with the Nazareth Baptist Church elders, Minister Macpherson announced that all construction activities at the site have been halted.

Two separate investigations are now underway to determine the cause of the failure:

  1. Council for the Built Environment (CBE): The Minister confirmed that the church has welcomed a formal investigation by the CBE. This probe will evaluate structural standards and design compliance before any rebuilding is permitted to resume.

  2. Internal Church Investigation: Reverend Mbongwa Nzama announced that the Nazareth Baptist Church is launching its own internal inquiry to ascertain exactly what went wrong during the construction of the accommodation block.

Additionally, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is liaising with the eThekwini Municipality to verify the building plans, regulatory approvals, and land preparation processes associated with the project.

Preventing Future Structural Failures

Minister Macpherson stated that the engagement at eBuhleni forms part of wider government consultations regarding the recently approved Integrated Social Facilitation Framework. This nationwide initiative aims to curb building collapses by improving coordination between different spheres of government, local communities, and the private construction sector.

"Having visited the site of the collapse today, I share the belief of the Shembe Church that it is by the grace of God that no lives were lost... We are committed to working with the church and built-environment professionals to strengthen construction practices, improve safety standards, and help prevent tragedies like this from happening again." — Minister Dean Macpherson

GOVERNMENT CALLS ON SOUTH AFRICANS TO HONOUR MANDELA MONTH THROUGH SERVICE AND ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP

KASIBC_AUDIO

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA – The South African government has issued a nationwide call to action for citizens, businesses, and civil society to honour the legacy of former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela through active citizenship and volunteerism.

Observed globally on 18 July (and formally established by the United Nations in 2009), Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated under the theme: "It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity." The theme targets South Africa's most pressing socioeconomic challenges—including persistent unemployment, hunger, and unequal opportunities—by driving collective, sustainable community action.

Water Access Takes Centre Stage

As part of Mandela Month, the government is moving beyond temporary volunteerism toward long-term, impactful infrastructure investments. Headlining these initiatives is the launch of the National Water Access Acceleration Programme by the Department of Water and Sanitation.

The program focuses on expanding clean water access to unserved and underserved rural communities through fit-for-purpose solutions. Key milestones include:

A Call for Year-Round Active Citizenship

In alignment with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s weekly message, the government stressed that overcoming deep-seated inequality cannot rest on the state's shoulders alone. Citizens are encouraged to dedicate at least 67 minutes of service on Mandela Day to support the vulnerable—whether through food security initiatives, community care, or local environmental clean-ups.

"Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings." Nelson Mandela

By uniting behind the spirit of ubuntu, the government hopes these collaborative efforts between state programs and active citizens will lay the foundation for a more equitable South Africa.

HOME AFFAIRS EXPANDS DIGITAL PARTNERSHIP AS ABSA GOES LIVE WITH SMART ID APPLICATIONS

KASIBC_AUDIO

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA – The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has announced a major expansion of its Digital Partnership Model, with Absa officially going live with digital Smart ID applications. Absa becomes the fourth major financial institution to offer this service, joining Capitec, Standard Bank, and First National Bank (FNB).

With Absa integrated into the platform, South Africans can now access secure Smart ID services through a growing network of 296 participating bank branches nationwide.

Phased Rollout and Mobile Expansion

The partnership introduces immediate processing capabilities alongside aggressive targets for the remainder of the year:

  • Immediate Branch Activation: 12 select Absa branches have been fully enabled to provide walk-in Home Affairs Smart ID services.

  • Rapid Expansion: A further 60 Absa branches are scheduled to go live before the end of 2026.

  • "Bank on the Move" Initiative: To reach underserved and remote areas, Absa will introduce an innovative mobile service component designed to bring secure Home Affairs services directly into local communities. Full operational details of this mobile rollout will be shared during an upcoming official event.

Phasing Out the Green Barcoded ID Book

The partnership model aims to accelerate national security efforts by completely replacing South Africa’s highly vulnerable, fraud-prone legacy green barcoded ID books with far more secure Smart ID Cards.

Public demand for these digitized banking channels is scaling rapidly:

  • 385,000+ Smart ID applications have already been successfully processed through the banking digital network within its first four months of operation.

  • 750 participating bank branches are targeted for system integration across all provinces by the close of 2026 under the broader Home Affairs @ home reform programme.

Ministerial Perspective: "The rapid expansion of our Digital Partnership with the banking sector demonstrates the success of our vision to fundamentally transform Home Affairs service delivery through digital innovation," said Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Leon Schreiber. "Processing more than 385,000 applications in just four months proves that South Africans are embracing a faster, more secure, and more dignified way of accessing state services closer to where they live and work."
