The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Fannie Masemola has met the Provincial Management of police in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday afternoon.

General Masemola first met with the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Mr Thami Ntuli to formally present Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal for the next five years.

During the meeting with SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Management, the National Commissioner said that the uncertainty and speculations are over. "I am here to formally announce to you that I have given Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi another five years to continue leading policing in this province. I am looking forward to a great teamwork that you have displayed over the past five years. You need to support Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi, and the only support you can give to him is through taking orders and do your job", said General Masemola.

He further told Deputy Provincial Commissioners and District Commissioners that they must not exclude community members in their strategies. "Do not police communities in their absentia. Involve them in your plans, give them roles to play so that they may take accountability of crime in their neighbourhood.

The community must feel you, both criminals and law-abiding citizens. Now that the uncertainty is gone, the focus must solely be on reducing crime and keeping our communities safe", added General Masemola.

When accepting another term to lead policing in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi said: "Thank you National Commissioner for the trust. It was not an easy decision for me because I had agreed with my family that I will only serve one term. The plan was to go on a holiday from 1 April 2026 but when the National Commissioner emphasized the importance of service to the people of South Africa, especially residence of KwaZulu-Natal, I reconsidered and made myself available to be of service to the nation. To my fellow colleagues, I am expecting nothing less than full cooperation and support.

The goals remain the same; to reduce crime, to attain a Clean Audit and ensure that our Clients are satisfied with our service to them", said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.

R2Billion Irregular ExpenditureThekwini, Kwa Zulu Natal

KASIBC_AFRICA BREAKING NEWS

R2Billion Irregular ExpenditureThekwini, Kwa Zulu Natal

CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE_EDITOR

The DA in eThekwini is calling for the immediate implementation of Section 32 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) following the City’s latest internal audit report, which reveals a staggering R1.264 billion in unauthorized, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure (UIFW) from the previous financial year, with a further R826 million already incurred in the current cycle.

The Act mandates that municipalities recover UIFW expenditure from the responsible person. It enforces personal liability for officials who intentionally or negligently causes such spending, requiring investigations, potential Council write-offs, and reporting criminal activity to SAPS.

The report is riddled with excuses such as “no update received” and “in progress”, some dating back to 2024. When auditors flag security risks and financial red flags, department heads routinely fail to act, with more than 70% of critical audit findings in the Finance and ICT departments left unresolved for over 180 days.

A 45% resolution rate on audit findings is a failing grade, yet in eThekwini it has become the norm. Heads of department continue to be promoted while ignoring audit queries for years without consequence.

While residents endure crumbling infrastructure, inaccurate billing and ongoing service delivery failures, funds meant for basic services are mismanaged with no accountability.

The deliberate disregard for the principles of good governance, as set out in the MFMA, must carry consequences.

Section 32 of the MFMA states that where officials fail to answer an audit query for six months, they must be held personally liable for financial losses incurred.

The DA will not allow the City Manager and executive leadership to hide behind administrative jargon.

We will continue to demand accountability and consequences for this R2 billion loss.

MEDIA SUPPRESSION IN SOUTH AFRICA ON THE EVE OF 2026 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

KASIBC_AFRICA BREAKING NEWS

MEDIA SUPPRESSION IN SOUTH AFRICA ON THE EVE OF 2026 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE_EDITOR

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) expresses serious concern over what increasingly appears to be a concerted effort by the media, particularly the SABC and now NewzroomAfrika, to suppress public engagement on the matter of the corrupt appointment and irregular salary adjustment of the Secretary to Parliament

There is a troubling and consistent pattern where media interviews involving the EFF on the matter of the appointment and salary adjustment of the Secretary to Parliament are cancelled at the last minute, often immediately after public communication or the issuing of a media alert by the organisation.

On 10 March, 12 March and 15 March 2026, scheduled interviews with the SABC were abruptly cancelled under the pretext of Ad Hoc Committee proceedings, which were used as an excuse.

Yesterday, a scheduled interview with Newzroom Afrika at 19:30 suffered the same fate, the excuse for the cancellation was that they need to research more on the matter. This is despite the fact that it was NewzRoom Afrika that scheduled an interview with the EFF, with an attached statement of the EFF.

This pattern cannot be dismissed as coincidence. It points to undue influence and political interference in editorial decisions, aimed at limiting public discourse and shielding serious issues of governance and possible corruption from scrutiny.

The timing of these cancellations, particularly following the publication of EFF posters and announcements, raises serious concerns about how editorial independence is being compromised in the coverage of this matter.

What is even more disturbing is that sections of the media are allowing themselves to be used in this process. In a constitutional democracy, the media has a duty to inform, interrogate and to hold those in positions of power accountable.

When media institutions withdraw platforms at critical moments under questionable circumstances, they risk becoming instruments of suppression rather than vehicles of transparency and accountability

The situation at the SABC is particularly concerning. There are growing indications of a broader effort to politicise the public broadcaster as the country approaches the 2026 Local Government Elections. This is not without precedent.

There was a period where the SABC effectively imposed a blackout on the EFF and its activities, limiting coverage of its programmes and political interventions during the elections. The current pattern suggests a return to such practices.

The EFF rejects any attempt to silence its voice or suppress matters of public interest. South Africans have a right to know the truth about governance failures and the use of public resources

We call on all media institutions to act independently, resist any form of interference, and uphold their constitutional duty to ensure transparency, accountability and freedom of expression

NYDA calls for Youth-Centred Economic Response in South Africa

KASIBC_AFRICA BREAKING NEWS

NYDA calls for Youth-Centred Economic Response in South Africa

CHANON LECODEY MERRICKS ONLINE_EDITOR

NYDA calls for a youth-centred economic response amid rising global uncertainty and domestic constraints.

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) notes the latest Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decision by the South African Reserve Bank to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.75 per cent, against a backdrop of heightened global uncertainty and emerging economic risks.

The MPC highlighted that the recent outbreak of conflict in the Middle East has caused a significant global supply shock, leading to higher prices for oil, gas, and fertilisers while dampening global growth prospects. These developments are expected to push inflation upwards in the short term, while also limiting economic activity.

Domestically, although economic growth has shown modest improvement with output increasing by 1.1 per cent in 2025, it remains well below the levels needed to tackle the country’s structural challenges, especially youth unemployment. The NYDA emphasises that the current growth trajectory is not sufficiently inclusive and continues to exclude large segments of young people from meaningful economic participation.

Inflation remains contained at around 3 per cent but is expected to rise temporarily due to higher energy prices, with fuel inflation projected to increase sharply in the coming months. While this reflects external cost pressures, it will have direct consequences for young people, particularly through rising transport and food costs, which disproportionately affect low-income households.

The decision to keep interest rates steady reflects a cautious approach to monetary policy amid these uncertainties. However, the NYDA warns that monetary policy alone cannot address the structural challenges facing the South African economy. Notably, the combination of weak economic growth, rising costs, and limited employment prospects risks further deepening the socio-economic vulnerabilities of young people.

From a developmental perspective, the current economic environment underscores the necessity for a more coordinated and growth-oriented policy response. Supply-side shocks, such as those caused by global conflicts, cannot be resolved solely through interest rate adjustments. Instead, they require complementary fiscal, industrial, and social policy interventions that strengthen domestic resilience and expand productive capacity.

The NYDA therefore calls for:

Accelerated public investment, particularly in infrastructure and sectors with strong employment potential.

Targeted support for youth-owned enterprises to mitigate the impact of rising input and operating costs.

Greater alignment between macroeconomic policy and youth development objectives.

The NYDA further emphasises that South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis is structural and requires deliberate policy action that goes beyond short-term stabilisation. Economic recovery must be measured not only by inflation outcomes, but by the extent to which it creates jobs, supports enterprise development, and improves the economic participation of young people.

The NYDA remains committed to advancing evidence-based policy solutions that place youth at the centre of South Africa’s economic response and long-term development trajectory.
