THE REOPENING OF MALVERN CLINIC AND EXPANSION OF HEALTHCARE SERVICES
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng congratulates the City of Johannesburg Department of Health, under the leadership of EFF-deployed MMC for Health and Social Development, Fighter Ennie Makhafola, on the reopening of the refurbished Malvern Clinic today. Years of neglect left the clinic with collapsed ceilings, broken infrastructure, flooded floors and unusable toilets, forcing patients and healthcare workers to endure undignified conditions. Its refurbishment has restored a clean, safe and functional healthcare facility to the people of Malvern, Jeppestown, Bezuidenhout Valley and surrounding communities. The EFF welcomes the work done to ensure that the clinic is stocked, secure and operating on the City’s eHealth system. The introduction of digital patient records will help address missing files, improve continuity of care and reduce delays in accessing treatment. Our people deserve prompt, respectful care in an environment conducive to healing. Since taking responsibility for the portfolio in 2023, Fighter Makhafola has overseen the opening of the upgraded Bophelong Clinic, the refurbishment of Zandspruit Clinic and the opening of the R90 million Naledi Clinic, expanding access to primary healthcare. The expansion of 24-hour services at Naledi, Florida and Westbury, alongside maternity services at Westbury and Florida, brings urgent care and support for mothers and babies closer to communities while easing pressure on hospitals. These interventions advance the EFF’s position that illness does not observe office hours, and healthcare must be available when people need it. The department also prioritized distribution of laptops to nurses through the eHealth programme, further supporting the modernisation of patient records, bookings and consultations. Beyond clinical services, the department further established a GenderBased Violence and Femicide Advisory Desk and a 24-hour Crisis Centre, thus strengthening access to social support and protection for vulnerable residents. The EFF commends the nurses, doctors, administrative staff, maintenance teams and departmental officials whose daily work makes these improvements possible. Their commitment must be supported through adequate staffing, reliable medicine supplies, consistent maintenance and responsive management. This is the standard of service the EFF believes all residents of Gauteng, and Johannesburg in particular, deserve: accessible healthcare, functioning public facilities and leadership that delivers. On 4 November, we call on our people to go out and vote EFF to build on this progress and extend it to every community. Let us use our votes to secure services that restore dignity and improve our daily lives.
