SOUTH SUDAN: GOVERNMENT MOVES TO PREPARE FOR ELECTIONS AS PEACE AND POLITICAL UNITY REMAIN CRITICAL

South Sudan is entering another important political period as President Salva Kiir's government works on electoral reforms, political dialogue and preparations for forthcoming national elections.

The government has recently approved amendments to the Elections Act as part of efforts to support the conduct of the country's next general elections.

The development comes at a critical moment for the world's youngest country.

ELECTORAL PREPARATIONS

The Council of Ministers, chaired by President Kiir, approved changes intended to support preparations for elections.

The government is also engaging political parties and other stakeholders in an effort to advance dialogue.

President Kiir recently held discussions with political leaders about elections, peace and government unity.

The electoral process is politically sensitive because South Sudan has experienced years of conflict and political instability.

A credible election could help strengthen national institutions.

A disputed or poorly prepared election could deepen existing tensions.

PEACE REMAINS FRAGILE

South Sudan's political system remains heavily influenced by the legacy of the country's civil war.

The peace agreement between Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar created a framework for power-sharing, but implementation has faced repeated delays and political disputes.

The country continues to require international humanitarian and development assistance.

POLITICAL DIALOGUE

The government's recent emphasis on inter-party dialogue is therefore significant.

South Sudan needs political actors to agree on the rules of competition.

The electoral process must be seen as legitimate by different political groups if it is to contribute to long-term stability.

Political dialogue also needs to involve civil society, women, young people and communities outside the capital.

HUMANITARIAN PRESSURES

South Sudan remains one of Africa's most challenging humanitarian environments.

Conflict, displacement, flooding, food insecurity and limited infrastructure continue to affect millions of people.

Recent humanitarian work in Terekeka illustrates the scale of need.

IsraAID distributed food supplies to more than 900 households in the area, demonstrating the continuing role of humanitarian organisations in supporting vulnerable communities.

TRADE AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Economic development is also essential.

The government recently approved a proposal for a one-stop border post at Nimule, South Sudan's major crossing toward Uganda.

Such infrastructure could help simplify trade and improve the movement of people and goods.

For a landlocked country, regional trade routes are particularly important.

South Sudan depends heavily on neighbouring countries for imports and transport links.

Improved border infrastructure could therefore reduce delays and support economic activity.

OIL REMAINS CENTRAL

Oil remains the backbone of South Sudan's formal economy.

However, dependence on petroleum creates major vulnerabilities.

Production can be affected by conflict, pipeline disruptions and international price movements.

The government needs to diversify agriculture, trade, manufacturing and services so that future economic growth is not entirely dependent on crude oil.

THE ROLE OF YOUNG PEOPLE

South Sudan has an exceptionally young population.

That presents both an opportunity and a challenge.

Young people need education, vocational training, employment and meaningful participation in political life.

If these opportunities are unavailable, frustration can increase instability.

If the country invests in its youth, the same demographic structure can become one of its greatest strengths.

South Sudan's immediate priorities are closely connected.

Election preparation requires political dialogue.

Political dialogue requires trust.

Trust requires implementation of peace commitments.

And long-term peace requires economic opportunity.

The government therefore faces a major responsibility as it prepares for elections.

The objective cannot simply be to hold a vote.

The country needs an electoral process that contributes to legitimacy, stability and national reconciliation.

South Sudan has enormous agricultural, oil, water and human potential.

Its future will depend on whether its political leadership can create institutions capable of transforming that potential into lasting peace and development.
