MEC MAILE DISMAYED AND MOURNS THE DEATH OF TWO LEARNERS IN ALEXANDRA

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr Lebogang Maile, is dismayed and mourns the tragic death of two learners who were reportedly shot and killed in Alexandra on the evening of Monday, 5 October 2026.

The deceased were a Grade 12 learner from Minerva Secondary School and a 17-year-old Grade 9 learner from Alexandra High School.

Preliminary information indicates that the learners were fatally shot on Alfred Nzo Street, opposite Madala Hostel in Alexandra. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including its motive and the events preceding it, remain the subject of a South African Police Service (SAPS) investigation.

“We are deeply dismayed by the loss of two young lives under such tragic circumstances. Regardless of the circumstances that may ultimately be established by the police investigation, the death of learners through violence is deeply concerning.

Our communities have an important role to play in creating safer environments for young people and protecting them from violence, criminality and circumstances that threaten their lives and futures,” said MEC Maile.

“The African idiom teaches us that it takes a village to raise a child. This tragedy must therefore remind us that protecting and guiding our children requires the involvement of the whole community.

Government and law-enforcement agencies must continue their work to combat criminality, but they cannot do it alone. Parents, community structures, religious leaders, young people and residents must stand together against criminality, promote safer communities and ensure that our children are protected.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, fellow learners, educators and school communities affected by this tragedy.

Anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation or lead to the arrest of those responsible is urged to provide that information to the police at Alexandra Police Station. Communities must work with law-enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible for criminal acts are brought to justice,” added MEC Maile.

The Gauteng Department of Education will provide the necessary psychosocial support to the affected school communities.

Home Affairs takes action against disinformation campaign on Constitutional Court judgment

The Department of Home Affairs is alarmed by an apparent coordinated disinformation campaign surrounding the Constitutional Court judgment of 7 July 2026 in the Scalabrini of Cape Town matter, concerning the operational processing of asylum applications.

The matter will be referred to the Independent Electoral Commission for further action in terms of the newly published Code of Conduct on Countering Disinformation.

Despite it being public knowledge that this case was vigorously opposed by the Department and that it led to a binding ruling of the Constitutional Court, nefarious actors have launched a large-scale disinformation campaign targeting the Minister of Home Affairs and other officials, claiming that the decision to suspend good cause interviews was taken at the initiative of the Minister, the Department, or political parties.

This is categorically false. The Constitutional Court handed down a binding judgment, which the Department is constitutionally obliged to implement. An operational directive was subsequently issued solely to give effect to that judgment, as is standard practice to ensure compliance with rulings of the highest court in the land.

Claims that this judgment by the Constitutional Court grants asylum seekers citizenship or provides for the blanket legalisation of foreign nationals are also categorically false.

Respect for binding court judgments is fundamental to the rule of law and our constitutional democracy. The Department will continue to fulfil its constitutional obligations, irrespective of whether it was successful in the litigation concerned. At the same time, the deliberate spreading of disinformation designed to inflame tensions and violence is a threat to the stability of our society.

The Department condemns, in the strongest terms, the peddlers of this disinformation. It also calls on South Africans to help combat the growing scourge of disinformation and incitement faced by Home Affairs officials on a daily basis, by verifying information prior to spreading lies that seek to incite violence or destabilise the foundations of our constitutional order.

GAUTENG PKTT ARRESTS SECOND SUSPECT IN EFF MEMBER MONICA DUBE MURDER CASE

The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has arrested a second suspect in connection with the murder of 44-year-old Monica Dube, an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party member.

Dube was shot and killed in the presence of her family members in June 2026 at her home in Wallmannsthal.

Following an intelligence-driven investigation, investigators positively linked another suspect, a 39-year-old male. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday evening by the PKTT.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 07 October 2026, where he will face a charge of murder.

This arrest follows the earlier arrest of Sipho Mahlangu in July 2026. Mahlangu has made several appearances before the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court and remains in police custody.

MURDER AND ATTEMPTED MURDER INVESTIGATION FOLLOWING R21 SHOOTING

The police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident on the R21 road towards OR Tambo International Airport on Monday evening, 05 October 2026.

According to preliminary information, a driver travelling in a Fiat reportedly experienced a breakdown and contacted a friend for assistance.

The friend arrived at the scene accompanied by two other people. As they were attending to the vehicle, shots were fired at them. The driver attempted to evade the gunfire but lost control of the vehicle, which collided with a jersey barrier.

The driver sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. One passenger sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital for medical treatment, while the third occupant managed to escape unharmed.

The motive for the shooting is currently unknown, and no arrests have been made at this stage. Police investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
