Randburg’s Five-Year Water Leaks

Johannesburg Water has failed, for more than five years, to repair a single water leak while the City loses almost half of its water before it gets to household and business taps, due to collapsing infrastructure. This is not due to a shortage of resources alone, but to a chronic shortage of leadership and management.

While officials cry “lack of resources” to fix collapsing water infrastructure, the real problem is negligence, a lack of accountability, and political indifference from the leadership that should be serving residents and businesses.

This week, RISE Mzansi’s Municipal Task Team conducted an oversight visit to Elsie Road and Malibongwe Drive, where residents have logged calls for over five years without action. Only after sustained pressure from RISE Mzansi did Johannesburg Water act.

A water leak left unattended for five years is not just a failure of maintenance, it is a symbol of failed governance. It proves that the City has abandoned its people, eroding trust and leaving residents and businesses with no faith in public entities.

RISE Mzansi therefore reiterates its call for the disbandment of all dysfunctional entity boards that continue to fail residents with no consequence.

We urge residents of Johannesburg not to reward uncaring politicians. Demand accountability, and elect leaders who will put residents first.

Restore Reliable Water Supply in Dipelaneng and Hobhouse

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mantsopa Local Municipality will take firm steps to ensure that a reliable water supply is restored to the communities of Dipelaneng and Hobhouse.

We will hold the Municipal Manager accountable for the ongoing failure to procure a replacement vehicle for the water division, despite insurance money having been paid out more than a year ago.

Following an oversight visit to the water reservoirs in Hobhouse, it was found that all five reservoirs were empty, with no water available to supply to the residents.

Municipal employees assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the water supply have been struggling to perform their duties for quite some time now, as the vehicle assigned to them was stolen. At the same time, they were busy working at the water reservoirs in 2023.

We wrote to the Municipal Manager in November 2024, after realising that the insurance had paid R284,000 for the stolen bakkie. Through her correspondence, the Municipal Manager indicated that a new bakkie for the Hobhouse water division would be procured in December 2024 or January 2025.

Until now, no new bakkie has been purchased for the water division in Dipelaneng and Hobhouse, forcing municipal employees to rely on their private cars to render services to residents or to rely on residents to drive them to reservoirs.

Another reason affecting the inconsistent supply of water to residents is the non-payment of Eskom's small account by the Mantsopa local municipality, which compels Eskom to cut the electricity supply to the pump at Leeurivier.

The DA in the Mantsopa local municipality will not rest until human dignity is respected. We will continue to fight for residents in the council and hold the Municipal manager accountable.

TEMBISA HOSPITAL CONTINUES TO ENSURE IMPROVED SERVICES FOR MENTAL HEALTHCARE USERS

The Gauteng Department of Health has noted the circulation of an old video on social media platforms perpetuating that mental healthcare users at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital are receiving poor care.

This video was taken in December 2022 at an overflow area in casualty department and it has since resurfaced to mislead the public into believing that the conditions remains the same even after improvements have been made at the facility.

It is important to mention that currently, there are no mental healthcare patients awaiting beds at Tembisa Hospital. The bed capacity for admission of mental healthcare users has since been increased to ensure that all patients in need of assessment and admission are catered for. Furthermore, the hospital has partnered with Solomon Stix Morewa Hospital to accommodate qualifying mental healthcare users.

Following the fire incident that occurred in April 2025, the hospital has since re-opened parts of the casualty department on the 29 September 2025, thereby creating more space for initial assessment of mental healthcare users.

The department condemn the misuse of social media to mislead the public as this may discourage people from coming forward to access the muchneeded care.

ISRAELI INTERCEPTION OF THE GLOBAL SUMUD FLOTILLA TO GAZA

ISRAELI INTERCEPTION OF THE GLOBAL SUMUD FLOTILLA TO GAZA

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) condemns, in the strongest terms, the violent interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli military forces. Once again, the apartheid state of Israel has shown that it cannot restrain itself from attacking even peaceful acts of international solidarity with the people of Gaza.

The flotilla, carrying activists, aid, and supplies, was an act of conscience and a mission to break the unlawful blockade and deliver much-needed humanitarian support to the people of Gaza. Instead of allowing this peaceful mission to proceed, Israel deployed its navy to capture the vessels, detain passengers, and silence voices of solidarity. Among those abducted are South Africans are celebrated writer and activist Zukiswa Wanner, Former Member of Parliament Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, and human rights advocate Reeaz Moola who have courageously taken up this journey to fight for the freedom of Palestinians despite the inherent danger.

Their detention is not only an affront to human rights, but a direct attack on our nation and its people. Across the world, outrage is growing as protests have erupted throughout Europe, with ordinary people making it clear that they are tired of Israel’s impunity and brutality.

The interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla has only deepened global resistance to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and has further exposed the illegitimacy of its actions.

DA takes Ward 26 away from ANC in eMalahleni

The Democratic Alliance (DA) surged to victory, winning ward 26 in eMalahleni Local Municipality from the ANC, in yesterday’s hotly contested by-election. This historic victory in Mpumalanga signals continued voter confidence and great momentum as we make inroads in ANC strongholds, ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

Voters from diverse communities are endorsing the DA’s proven track record of good governance, rejecting corruption and failed policies that have locked people out of opportunities.

The DA’s newly elected Ward Councillor, Sonja Liebenberg, will now join the DA team of hardworking Councillors who are fighting in councils for better delivery and basic services.

Residents of ward 26 eMalahleni have been subjected to poor service delivery for far too long a time, with the previous ANC Councillor also implicated in an alleged rape scandal.

We express gratitude and thank each voter who turned out to vote DA. We also commend the DA campaign team, staff, activists and our public representatives who worked day and night during this by-election.

THE PASSING OF HON. NATHI MTHETHWA

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has received with shock and deep sorrow the news of the passing of South Africa’s Ambassador to France and former Minister, Hon. Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa.

ESKOM PROFITABILITY 2025/2026

ESKOM PROFITABILITY 2025/2026

The African National Congress (ANC) notes and welcomes Eskom’s first profit after many years of turmoil and uncertainty over the utility’s future. The R16 billion after-tax profit recorded in the year ending March 2025 is the first in eight years. This achievement reflects years of hard work and demonstrates a firm commitment to fixing the national electricity utility, strengthening financial systems, and ensuring effective revenue collection.

The profit, coupled with the synchronisation of Unit 6 at Kusile to the national grid, which will contribute to achieving a 75% Energy Availability Factor (EAF), are essential toward building a world-class institution. The ANC notes with appreciation the leadership of the Minister of Electricity, Dr. Kgosientso Ramakgopa and his collective at ESKOM to turnaround the utility to discharge its legislative mandate of providing electricity and serving the country.

This augurs well towards an institution capable of financing its operations, financial liquidity, and optimisation of capacity, electricity generation and distribution. Of great concern however, is the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (NERSA) tariff increase miscalculation to ESKOM. This error should not be passed upon the economically overstretched consumers
