RWANDA REPORTEDLY WINS AFRICA’S FIRST FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX RACE DEAL SINCE 1993 FOR BUGESERA PERMANENT CIRCUIT

KIGALI — In a major breakthrough for African sports infrastructure and global motorsport, global racing authorities have reportedly selected Rwanda to host the first Formula 1 Grand Prix on the African continent in over thirty years.

The landmark selection brings the world's premier motorsport series back to African soil for the first time since the 1993 Grand Prix at Kyalami in South Africa.

According to international motorsport sources and official project outlines, the upcoming African Grand Prix will be staged on a state-of-the-art permanent circuit being constructed adjacent to the new Bugesera International Airport complex outside Kigali.

The world-class racing facility, designed in partnership with renowned circuit architectural firm Apex Circuit Design and former F1 driver Alexander Wurz, forms part of Rwanda's broader national strategy to establish the nation as a premier international hub for sports tourism, technology, and global conferences.

President Paul Kagame, who spearheaded the formal bid alongside the Rwanda Governance Board and the Ministry of Sports, confirmed that the multi-million dollar motorsport development aligns with the country’s Vision 2050 framework.

The Bugesera facility will incorporate eco-friendly racing technologies, advanced solar power installations, and high-capacity grandstands integrated with international transport links directly connecting the circuit to Kigali’s hospitality sector.

NATIONAL CYBER SECURITY AUTHORITY LAUNCHES 2026 DATA PROTECTION CAMPAIGN AS DIGITAL SERVICES EXPAND NATIONWIDE

KIGALI — The Ministry of ICT and Innovation, alongside the National Cyber Security Authority (NCSA), officially launched the 2026 National Cyber Security and Data Protection Awareness Campaign across all administrative provinces.

Addressing technology stakeholders at the launch in Kigali, Minister Paula Ingabire highlighted that safeguarding digital infrastructure and personal data privacy remains critical as online financial, civic, and healthcare transactions expand exponentially.

The national campaign focuses on enforcing strict compliance under Rwanda's Personal Data Protection and Privacy Law across both public agencies and private corporate enterprises.

Specialized technical teams are conducting training workshops for financial institutions, telecommunications operators, and small-to-medium digital enterprises to protect citizens against cyber threats, identity theft, and unauthorized data exploitation.

Concurrently, local administrative communes across the City of Kigali and the Western Province are conducting public workshops on digital literacy and secure mobile financial services.

Government spokespersons emphasized that building public trust in digital platforms accelerates the transition toward a fully cashless, knowledge-based economy.

PARLIAMENT APPROVES NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR TRANSFORMATION (NST 2) AS FISCAL DECENTRALIZATION EXPANDS ACROSS DISTRICTS

KIGALI — Legislative proceedings at the Parliament of Rwanda in Kigali reached key momentum as lawmakers unanimously approved statutory frameworks under the updated National Strategy for Transformation (NST 2).

The legislative roadmap outlines priority government spending, institutional reforms, and economic development goals for the upcoming five-year cycle.

Inside the Chamber of Deputies, parliamentary committees evaluated draft statutory updates designed to deepen fiscal decentralization across all thirty districts (Uturere).

The approved administrative adjustments empower local district councils to retain a higher proportion of locally collected revenues, streamlining community infrastructure funding, local road maintenance, and primary education facilities.

Civil society organizations and local governance experts engaged in public parliamentary hearings, commending the government's transparent performance contracts (Imihigo) mechanism.

Parliamentary floor leaders reaffirmed that district-level accountability and performance-based budget allocations ensure balanced socio-economic development across both urban and rural communities.

BUSINESS

RWANDA’S ECONOMY MAINTAINS RESILIENT PERFORMANCE WITH 9.7% H1 GDP GROWTH DRIVEN BY INDUSTRY AND SERVICES

KIGALI — Economic statistics released by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) show an impressive macroeconomic trajectory, with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanding by 9.7% over the first half of 2026. BNR Governor Soraya Hakuziyaremye confirmed during a financial media briefing in Kigali that economic growth was broad-based, anchored by a 15.5% expansion in the industrial sector and 7.4% growth across services.

The central bank report highlighted that strong construction activity, expanding manufacturing output, and robust trade and transport services sustained the country's economic momentum despite global economic uncertainties. BNR projects an overall annual economic growth rate of 7.8% for 2026, supported by continued expansion in non-agricultural sectors.

To further stimulate private enterprise, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), launched a "Smarter Capital" financial initiative.

The program provides affordable, long-term credit lines and business technical support for youth-led enterprises operating in high-growth commercial sectors, including digital services, light manufacturing, and value-added agricultural processing.

HEALTH MINISTRY EXPANDS AUTOMATED EPIDEMIOLOGICAL TRACKING NETWORK AND INAUGURATES RURAL SPECIALIZED CLINICS

KIGALI — The Ministry of Health, working alongside the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), officially expanded an automated health information system connecting health centers across all thirty districts directly to central epidemiological databases in Kigali.

Speaking at a clinical commissioning event, health leadership demonstrated how the real-time tracking system monitors pharmaceutical inventory levels, preventing stock-outs of essential antibiotics, pediatric vaccines, and maternal health kits across outlying rural health centers.

Simultaneously, the ministry inaugurated twelve newly constructed specialized maternal and child health posts across the Southern and Eastern provinces.

Equipped with solar-powered diagnostic equipment, cold-chain refrigeration, and emergency transport ambulances, the new facilities aim to improve rural clinical access and further reduce infant and maternal mortality rates nationwide.

PUBLIC SECTOR E-GOVERNANCE EXPANDS VIA IREMBO PORTAL AS CUSTOMS AUTOMATION SPEEDS UP REGIONAL TRADE

KIGALI — The Ministry of Public Service and Labour, alongside Rwanda’s flagship e-governance portal Irembo, announced the addition of over forty new digital public services.

Citizens, commercial entities, and diaspora members can now request land registration titles, verify civil status records, and apply for commercial licenses online without visiting municipal offices.

Government spokespersons highlighted that expanding administrative digitization significantly lowers transaction costs, eliminates bureaucratic delays, and enhances operational transparency across state departments.

In trade logistics, the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) introduced automated customs clearance protocols and digital cargo scanning technology at primary border posts, including Rusumo and Rubavu.

The technological upgrades have reduced freight clearing times, supporting smooth cross-border commerce under the East African Community (EAC) and African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) frameworks.

The initiative provides state-of-the-art sound stages, digital editing suites, and intellectual property registration support for local content creators.

Cultural commentators note that digital streaming platforms have enabled Rwandan musicians, screenwriters, and fashion designers to export authentic African storytelling to global audiences, converting creative talents into a major driver of youth employment and cultural tourism.
